While the Rust Gun can kill Transformers eating them alive with Rust I came to the realization it is weapon created to destroy Transformium. The Rust is either developed against Creator's Transformium and Seed technology or specifically created to kill Transformers.
Lol, it's just a cool gun for one cool Transformer. And remember, they were already made from the Transformanium, so why would they need to fight it back?
I remember when Jetfire said: 'Without Energon we will be oxydized and rusted". The gun must have been designed to some how kill the energon inside a Transformers and turn them into rust
Actually you're right, watch the Rust Gun's reaction towards non-transformium metals in this scene from DoTM, skip to 0:57 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9J8n-vMxU0 Notice it only explodes on impact but it doesn't consume or rust them, must only apply to Transformium.
I think the writers wont be bothered to remember one-off concepts from previous instalment while writing the upcoming movie.
Perhaps Sentinel lives in fear of zombies hence he makes sure to eradicate any trace of a corpse to ensure a robot zombie apocalypse can never happen

I'm still wondering why is Ironhide the only one who turn his back against Sentinel when everyone else is paying attention to what he says. If he had turned around to listen to Sentinel, he might have avoided the shot
