So this thread is jumping the gun, I'll update as I go. I want a homage to alternators smokescreen to go with my earthrise Datsun brothers. But here's the catch, I don't want a datson. Enter cyberverse Prowl: The subaru is a die-cast pullback and go. 1:36 scale. I have found decals that are 1:32 and 1:43. Not sure if either will be close enough to work. Next is the head. I couldn't find a 3d model or print that I could scale down, so I'm going the old school route. This is a rubber mold I made: Next I need to mix up some reduc-it plaster to shrink it down. Then another rubber mold, then casting resin. I'm not sure how much I'm going to chop off the die-cast to splice on the bot. I've never done a full reshell and I definitely don't have the time to bite that off now, but I figure the air intake, the front bumper, and the spoiler are easy. Plus the rims.
There’s a way to change the sizes of your silicone mold with mineral spirits. I’ve never done it but I saw a video on YouTube on it. The CrafsMan Steadycraftin was the channel.
BTW this is what it looks like while the plaster is still fresh and shrinking. It turns white as it dries. When I get a good enough cast at the right size, I'll touch up the air bubbles with wax.
So even if this isn't the one I use, at least it looks like I'm getting the size right: In the mean time, I made my first big cut (front bumper) And started making fillers with styrene
Man, if you can get a smooth cast at that size, I want one! Looks a bit rough right now, look forward to seeing what you can do with it. I remember someone using something called Hydroshrink or something like that to shrink down molds with pretty good success if that helps
Hm, would have thought cutting the silicone with mineral spirits would have been an easier way to get a smaller, cleaner casting. Still, can't wait to see how this turns out.
Riskier. The mold material I use is more costly, so trying an unknown (cutting with a solvant) I have no idea how much it will shrink, how much to mix in. Plus, my mold material is a putty, not a liquid, so harder to mix in. This way I know I'm only going to have to make 2 molds. The plaster stuff reduces by 50% when you use 2 parts water to 1 part powder. The plaster copy can get touched up with wax to fill air bubbles before the second mold is made. The only hurdle I have is I no longer have access to a debubblizer (or Pressure pot). When I go to cast the resin, it will make life more difficult.
I think this is super cool. I would like to see that head on an Earthrise/Buzzworthy Datsun figure, though.
