im thinking about making a custom emirate xaaron from the cyberverse deluxe megatron. is it possible to dye grey plastic to yellow? i know you cant go lighter than the plastic color, i just dont know if grey is considered lighter or darker than yellow (in my mind grey is lighter so it would work)
That title confused the he'll out of me for a sec XD Anyway, I've never painted, but in terms of coloring I think greyish (insert normal figure color here) is better than just pure grey. After all, grey optimus from the 1986 movie kept his colors, they were just "muted" or "shaded". Almost black and white.
So essentially, it isn't light or dark grey exactly. Its the transformer's colors muted and darkened, looking... well, dead. Heck, there was a dead colored variant of the Masterpiece MP-04 Optimus Prime that did this.
i think you misunderstand, im basically wanting to take this figure and turn it into this guy so its not about a dead transformer and more that i want to dye the plastic from grey to yellow and i dont know if thatll work
Ahh I got you now. Yeah, I think its possible, you'll just probably need to coat it a few times over. I'd wait for someone more equipped to help though lol
A lot of it depends on the plastic, but I have never seen a dye that can make plastic a lighter color. The base plastic is always the starting point. You could always give vinyl spray dye a shot. It's available at auto parts stores. The black I've used is amazing, so maybe a yellow would be able to cover the gray enough to give it a better base color.
that was something i was considering as well, i found some yellow vinyl spray on amazon. was hoping to find the brand you used on barricade but their brand doesnt come in yellow
It won't work. That grey on Megatron isn't super dark but it's dark enough that it's going to severely darken your yellow. It's going to end up more of a dirty mustard color than a Xaaron yellow. Now if you want to use that as a base and then paint over it, I think you'd get good results - the exposed areas (hinges and such) along with any knicks in your paintjob would look better with a dirty mustard color than they would with a light grey color. But if you're hoping to just dye and be done with it, it's not going to look good.
thats not a bad idea, thanks for the advice! and yea, the yellow turning out more like a burnt or dirty mustard was one of my worries with the idea
