There is nothing in their policies that state that you have to pay for return postage except I believe if you provide an incorrect address. Screen shot all their policies regarding returns, damaged items, shipping policies and your emails to them and open a Paypal claim. If I remember correctly Paypal gives you 180 days now to file a claim and you say it's been 5 months so about 150 days. So you still have 30 if I'm right. TF-Direct claims they'll send out replacement parts if a product arrives damaged unless it's a known manufacturer defect. There's no mention of shipping charges so IMO they're breaking their own business policies with you. Why TF screws some customers and not others I don't know. Maybe it depends on what rep you get when talking to them? I always get Emily. Maybe they roll dice or flip a coin to decide who gets bent over? I don't know but there's something real funky with them IMO. I'd escalate the claim as soon as I could. When Paypal gets involved call Paypal itself and IME they settle the claim during the phone call. I'd also always take screen shots going forward of any TF-Direct order to be on the safe side.
