Hi. I have a question about Kickstarters, and thought maybe somebody here could answer it.

Can you use Kickstarter to raise money without having to provide some sort of product for the contributors? Could it be used just to raise money without having to give anything in return? I'm looking to raise a lot of money to set myself for my financial future. I'm getting to that age where I need to start thinking about being financially secure, because, heaven forbid if something would happen to me, what would I leave my friends and family with? I want to make sure they have a nest egg that could get them through the tough times.

I don't think Kickstarter allows that kind of thing. Indiegogo might.

Let me get this straight? You want to start a Kickstarter campaign with people giving you money with no product or services to offer?

I believe what you're looking for is called a job. Do you really expect peope to just give you money for no reason?

Yes, especially using one of the services where you aren't held to account to deliver whatever the hell it is you promise. But then you'd also be a massive douchebag.

I have heard of a job. I have one. A crappy one. I work a minimum wage, part time job on the weekends (since I go to that place called school). I've been working the same job about a year now, and I barely have enough money to buy a used junker or things like clothing.

Meanwhile, a kickstarter is able to raise thousands of dollars in a matter of days, and in some cases, millions. That's more money than I'll ever make. So the payoff is there. I guess it's ok to throw millions of dollars towards a video game or a movie, but not when its someone's life we're talking about.

In a way I am trying to kick-start something. MY LIFE.

That school is supposed to be the thing that gets you out of your shitty dead end job and puts your life in gear, not trying to get people to give you free money on kickstarter. That's an abuse of the spirit of the service out of laziness.

Want to know why people throw gobs of money at Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden 2 and your kickstarter would probably hover around zero? Because the site exists for people to put money into projects they want to bring into the world. People would rather live in a world where Veronica Mars gets a movie than where you get a less-shitty car and a slightly better wardrobe.

The whole point of a Kickstarter is to KICKSTART an idea or product that has potential but needs funding. What you're asking for is Charity, something many more people in FAR worse situations then you need far more.

Even if you were able to start a Kickstarter (projects have to be reviewed and approved before being opened for funding), you have to give people a good incentive to WANT to donate. Most people donate to products on Kickstarter because they want something in return, like fully playable video games, hardcopy versions of comics or books, action figures, statues, and multiple other products. So no, you could not start a Kickstarter, say "give me money" and expect to get anything in return.

...I really hope this is some sort of troll topic or something.

Hasn't helped me so far :/

Which seems frivolous to me because millions of dollars are being put into a single game, a single movie, where in my case the money would be used so I can live a decent standard of living, and the money would go to family in the event something would happen to me. This money would do a lot more good than a video game or some other frivolous item. Not just for me but Kickstarter could help a lot of people in need out. If Kickstarter campaigns are exclusively related to 'geek culture' products, video games, comics, movies....well what about people who really need it? Instead of working my whole life making minimum wage, I could be financially secure for life in a few weeks. What is there to argue here? It's not demanding money from people, it's just asking for donations like every Kickstarter. If you are selfish enough to donate to these campaigns under the condition that you get something in return, well what a saint you are.

    :/

Finish your degree and/or take a more marketable program of education?

To be perfectly blunt, frivolous is subjective. Helping YOU have a better life seems like a perfectly reasonable objective... to you, but shit, even something like a video game or a pony dating sim or a collection of fanfic makes it's donors happy. So saying the money would do more "good" with you is coming from a biased place, given in a lot of cases the money donated goes to giving the project leaders an income WHILE they create something they wouldn't have the money to pursue otherwise.

Wanting something else in return for donating money is hardly selfish in the face of asking for money with the explicit stance of giving nothing in return.

I mean, basically, you're asking to go on internet welfare.

    1. How bout you don't spend that money on something you obviously do not need and save it?

    2. Finish school and get a good paying job, then we will see.

    3. See, there is your main problem. We don't know you, so why should we bother donating to you? What makes you so much more special than other people in the world?

    4. See 2.

All in all, you sound like an entitled brat who wants handouts because you can't be bothered to set your own life straight and get your priorities sorted out.

The world is a harsh, cruel and cold place. Deal with it.

Shave your head, don't shower for two days, and panhandle in a densely populated area. You can get an extra 5-6 bucks every day if you can pull it off.

    Boom, problem solved.

Citation: I did this one time on a dare. I got $5.76.

If you wanna live like this, though, be prepared to live in a homeless camp and spend half your time digging in the trash.
