Here's the father of all Transformers, Primus! I decided to give him a Rodimus Prime inspired paint job like the G1 Marvel Comics, which is an idea I like for many reasons. Of note is a special request by the one and only Tom Servo, a Unicron claw mark on planet mode! I tried something new with the glowing planet areas, which was starting with yellow, then doing paint wipes with neon red to get the edges, and then drybrushing silver to get all the buildings.

Let me say this project took forEVER. So much paint...so many details...

I wanted to focus on a few things, like the glowing power spots we always see in planet mode, and I tore big chunks out of two corners to look like bent metal and added exposed wiring. I wanted the robot mode to look clean and regal, while the planet mode looked like the traditional Cybertron we always see in various media. I used a dremel to add some damage, including the famous Unicron hand-swipe added in the 1986 movie!

I used various enamels and acrylics, and lots of them!. The entire planet mode was drybrushed with 3 different silvers by hand and has some rust, lights, damage, anything I could think of at the time. All the gold is clear yellow hand painted over silver.

I actually took a couple with the flash on to demonstrate how metallic he is in robot mode.

I really enjoyed the project, thanks for your time!

At first I clicked the link thinking "wow this is a crazy idea".

But dear sweet merciful heaven, that is one sweet looking custom. Looks brilliant. So much detailing and the claw marks are really cool.

    Well done :)

JEEZ! How many Matrixes did Hot Rod open up?! :)

LOVE IT! The colors look great in bot mode. I love how worn the planet mode looks and the glow of the cities. Great job!

Was Primus actually colored in Rodimus Prime's colors in the Marvel comics? Oh well, still looks awesome. A job well done.

Yes. This is what he looked like pre-Cybertron:

    And after he became Cybertron:

Compare the head of Rodimus Prime and Primus. Rodimus Prime is essentially the rebirth of Primus in G1. According to Grims Grams in issue 160 of the Marvel comic, Primus created Hot Rod in his image so he could become Rodimus Prime.

Thanks so much everyone! It always means alot.

As far as the idea/Marvel comics, I suppose it's based around the idea that Rodimus/Primus are based around the same colors. 80s comics are notorious for having awful, terrible coloring, sometimes almost psychadelic. So, I took the few panels that were available, (thanks Trikeboy, those are the exact panels I referenced) and went from there, taking the idea and then using the direct color scheme from the cartoon Rodimus Prime.

    Thanks again everyone!

Fantastic paint job there! I like the white at the wrists and the detail is amazing. Definitely didn't know my Primus had all those details in the mould. Thanks for the tip about 'glowing' details, I would have done it the hard way (I would have painted the darker background and then added a light center).
