I'm solidly in the camp that thinks the deluxe Prime Ironhide/Kup mold is a lot of fun. I'm also in the camp that hates the AM stickers with a passion. This is the first AM figure I've picked up where I felt compelled to add some paint apps. I used the concept art as a guide for painting him (and a few slight color changes). The only thing I left out was the yellow/orange stripes, because I don't have the patience and skill to do smaller and thinner lines and keep them clean and straight. Plus, I think he looks fine without them. My only semi-disaster was heating up the pins to remove the fake windshield from his chest in order to paint behind it. Turns out my soldering iron heated up much faster than I had realized, and in turn, melted part of the shoulder surrounding the pin. Somehow, I was able to fix everything and maintain the same range of motion from before the melting. It's not pretty, but that area is also always covered up, so unless you go looking for it, you'll never see it. I hope you guys enjoy it! C & C are always welcome.
great looking job, personally I think he needs a bit more red or even just silver in the arms in robot mode, but you did a good job emulating the concept art. the cannons look great. I can see in robot mode the feet and in truck mode the black are a wee bit sloppy, could have used some masking to get a crisp line. other then that very nice paint job.
Thanks! Unfortunately, the back of the truck was with masking. There was a tear in the tape that I didn't see, so the paint bled through that tear. It was worse, but I cleaned it up... but apparently not enough. As for the feet, the silver I used was just about out, and had a gummy consistency that I tried to thin out, but it was a constant struggle. I'll probably redo some areas once I get a new bottle of silver. I also noticed I never painted the tail lights or the headlights until just now. Whoops. Thanks very much for looking, and for the suggestions!
Thats looks great! One thing that would fix where the paint bled through, and also make it more accurate, would be to add the thin yellow strip that goes across the sides of the truck.
really nice repaint, jus need to improve on cleanliness.. btw, i was wondering 1 part, in bot mode at area of insignia u paint it silver there, it looks like the hood in alt mode ( which u painted it in black color), should it be silver too?
Thanks, and good point. When my silver paint comes in and I go back to retouch, I might have to go ahead and give the yellow strip a try Heh... not sure I'd say perfectly, but it's certainly close enough for my taste . I actually like yours more, but I'm happy enough with mine (after a few touch-ups). Thanks for checking it out and the kind words! Thanks! You know, I didn't even think about the placement of the symbols. I thought I followed the CGI design for those parts pretty closely, but I don't have the image in front of me, so maybe I missed that. Either way, it never occurred to me that they might be the same when I painted those areas. I just always assumed they were different spots. I'm thinking I need to stop using our SLR camera for documenting customs, as any imperfection gets amplified big time. I really think a lot of what's showing up here is much less noticeable when hanging out on a shelf. Still, I absolutely appreciate the comments and suggestions. It didn't feel like it, but I'm sure I rushed myself a bit with this one, and that it shows through the power of the damn camera. I think from here on, I'm taking pictures with an old Polaroid and scanning the pictures in
haha.. u know what? the place that i thought should be the same colors, i actually paint it like u did, black in alt mode and silver in bot mode.. lol.. cos.. who cares which 1 is accurated, as long as it looks nice ur repaint ironhide giv me the idea how i should play with my ironhide, really nice!
