It is a bit too purse-ish in proportions for my style, but I really like the design. If I was one to carry a bag like that, I’d get it in a heartbeat.

These bags are basically the same as "record bags" or "sports bags", which are worn by men all around the world. There's a huge market for them and are a commonplace sight, especially in most cities. It's not just a Japanese thing. You can see people wearing them in London, New York, etc. I've got several, from companies such as "Gola", "Super Dry" and Dunlop. I've even got larger one that's a a reversible Autobot/Decepticon version.

The only place I've ever received ridicule for having one was in a very small village in the British countryside (it doesn't even have a convenience store, but rather a "village shop/post office" that's mainly closed), but that was to be expected, due to it being stuck in some sort of time-vortex.

As for the rest of the world, it's a perfectly normal thing. I don't wear them over just one shoulder, as in the picture (above), which some might consider "effeminate", but rather over one shoulder and over the back, which is how most people wear them, I think.
