I used to love Powerpuff girls, their 'old' cartoon that aired on Cartoon Network back in the late 90's. (I know about this thread, but want to talk about the old school PPG... if it's not considered separate enough, merge them!) Anyway recently (as in the last couple of days) I've introduced my two year old daughter to the delights of PPG from the old DVD's I have, Powerpuff Bluff, Down n Dirty, The Mane Event and Meet the Beat Alls. I have yet to show her the PPG Movie though, that one we're saving for a rainy day. (And yes, my copy of 'Meet the Beat All's is a first edition copy, Funlove virus edition! As confirmed when I ripped the video for my little ones Innotab and my PC lit up like Star Trek Red Alert, hohoho). Anyway my love for the series has rekindled so much I've replaced my aging sig with a shot from the Emmy nominated episode 'Bubblevicious' which originally aired in 1999! Wowzers. That's 15 years ago... but I also found a couple of things while I perused yesterday, the 10th Anniversary DVD set which features every episode (instabuy) and also found this. Hahahah wow. That is so cool. Anyway talk about the old school PPG, or well anything PPG I guess. Right now I can't get over how good the old episodes still are, 'Los Dos Mojos' and 'Just Another Manic Mojo' are still ranked as my favourite episodes evar. Mojo Jojo is the greatest super villian EVAR. I've also found a couple of old Soundtrack CD's, 'The Sounds of Townsville' and 'Heros and Villains' which are both very indicative of late 90's early 2000's kinda music... some good beats and themes but overly self indulgant nonsense in places. Me and the Missus also dug out some old PPG plush toys we had in a box, and the reaction from my little girl was priceless. (Buttercup is her favourite, Bubbles is mine.). Go girls, GO!
PPG was pretty ruddy good, and the movie was a way better Superman movie than Man of Steel. Professor Utonium > Pa Kent.
I don't think I've ever seen a full episode. I remember the dad of one of my friends just used to sit watching Cartoon Network all day & this always seemed to be on.
Thought I'd revive this because...I'm watching something...odd. See me, feel me, Gnome me. ...What....The...Heck? I just... What IS this? What on EARTH is this? I mean? Ugh....what is it?
The show was surprisingly violent for the time it was played on TV, but what do you expect from a show originally called "woopass stew" (the pilot and original idea anyway) I remember him scaring the crap out of me when I was little
Powerpuff Girl is awesome. especially Bubbles. I also love the japanese adaptation, PPGZ, my favorite is well, Rolling Bubbles. Bubbles is awesome in every version,
well to be fair, PPG come from a differ time... right now, people would even complain about the violence of loony toons and animaniacs.
My favorite episodes were always the broccoli invasion episode, the one where they become alternate super heroes or something, and the monster has to tell them to get their shit together. All time favorite was the one when the Boogeyman tried to take over the world, complete with A New Hope homage.
Blossom- Looks the same Buttercup- Love the cowlick Bubbles- Funny how just changing the position of her pigtails makes her cuter Love the new designs. Sure they look pretty much the same but with the exception of Blossom they have tiny differences. It's simple yet effective and MUCH better than the Dance Pantsed designs. As for the new voices. Amanda (Blossom)- Sounds like really a good fit actually. Kristen (Bubbles)- I'm the most iffy about this one. Hopefully she will speak in a higher voice. Natalie (Buttercup)- Maybe.
While I wish they used the original cast, I am totally ready for the new show. Can't wait! I hear this argument a lot and it seems to come from people who don't actually watch animated TV these days. There seems to be a lot of "it was better before" attitudes where "before" could mean the 90's, 80's, 70's or even the 50s. Not only is the quality of animation these days at an all time high, the shows do not shy away from cartoonish violence, or even outright violence in action cartoons. Just watch Teen Titans Go or Gravity Falls.
I loved PPG back in the 1990s. It was a wonderful blend of awesome and funny and slipped in a whole bunch of adult material that I didn't catch on till I was older (good luck trying that nowadays). Each of the characters were all so great and likeable, even the villains themselves. My favourite episodes were the rainy day, the Amoeba Boys epidemic, the tooth episode and the Fuzzy Lumpkins wedding episode. The movie was nice, it was more or less a feature filled with the same stuff. I haven't seen the anime, so I have to ask, is it any good? (And there was another PPG show, what happened with that?) As for this new show, the designs look nice and updated, but I'm not really feeling the voice actors. Of course, it's too early. But here's hoping this PPG will be good.
This. If anything, cartoons nowadays embrace both violence and the utterly bizarre, more so than animated shows back in the day. Hell, just look at great examples like Regular Show, Gumball, and Adventure Time.
