Finished powered convoy repaint of a g1 Optimus and Magnus trailer. I had the idea for a while to do this I just needed a jumpstart. I found the Optimus at a flea market for $20 and just decided to go for it. I started with the Optimus and used the paint I had on hand that was a close match. Krylon spray paint. For the trailer I decided to do it with better paint so I bought the remaining colors by tamiya. My friend bid for the trailer and accessories for me for pretty cheap. Three auctions total. I have just about $130 dollars invested in the project. Including the transformers themselves, paint and repro stickers and resin cast black fists for the cab which are not pictured, they came later. I'm really pleased with how it came out and it's now one of my favorite pieces in my collection.
I saw you post this on /r/transformers a few weeks back, great work! If it wasn't for the paint on the eyes being a bit rough around the edges and a spot of the original blue visible on the helmet, I'd think this was the real deal!
Thank you! And yeah I post on Reddit but decided to create an account here like a week or two ago so I'm new. And yeah those are the two areas that needed improvement. I want to find another head for the cab and try again. It's a shame that the trailer I bought came with a Magnus cab minus the head
That looks great! The paints finish makes it look like the prototypes that would be used in early promotional stuff. Fantastic work.
This turned out extremely well! I absolutely love the details on the eyes and crest. Very professionally realized .....and it was only 130$ that's BANG for your buck right there. Can you please post more pics? Oh, and do you mind if I PM you for some tips .......I am looking to undertake this challenge myself and create an ichiban diaclone sunstreaker ......my friend.
What black paint did you use for the white shoulder stacks? I've been trying to do the same thing but when I try to dye the plastic, it gets all warped from the heat. Also, any tips on how to remove the tires from the end of the trailer/feet to get it painted?
I wanted to dye them originally too but it didn’t work for me so I used Tamiya flat black. It was a pain to pry the wheel pins out. But it was ultimately worth it. I forget exactly how I did it as it’s been a while since I did this.
