It's not Rodimus, at all, and I don't understand why everyone wants to shoehorn it into being one.

i'm very interested in this, great modifications. I would have to say I'd prefer him to be in normal MP scale and not oversized! the pieces look nicely compartmentalized, I wonder if this could even be an upgrade kit???

Except that tiny MP-28 is not normal MP scale. He's a dwarf. An oversized version could possibly be perfect for those of us that don't want Prowl-sized Hot Rod. I'd love a Buzzing/Tesla/Transistor scaled Hot Rod.

Because Hot Rod and Rodimus are pretty much identical looking except for Rodimus being bigger and having a slightly different face and because the MP Rodimus we've been given is widely regarded as being a piece of junk so a stand-in would be nice. If this guy is oversized to MP-10ish size, then he just needs a new face to be Rodimus in bot mode.

He also had a much darker colour scheme compared to Hot Rod.

I don't disagree about the color scheme but I wouldn't use Call of the Primitives as an example of canon. That episode's artwork was...unique.

An upsized /MPP-28 would be great. I already own two of the MP28 Hot Rod (1 original deco and the other with reprolabels from toyhax AND two Hasbro edition MP-09s), but would love to own the modified MPP-28. MP09 was a great MODEL to display, but I loved the playability (yes I'm 40 y/o) of MP28. And I always wished for a mesh of two (bigger size and playability). I have faith in Wei Jiang. I already own the MPP-10 mold and best Prime ever, Wei Jiang really put a lot of love into it ; I believe they will do the same with MPP-28.
The wheels and most of MP28's original transformation's back-pack ending up in his now bulkier legs just works so much better for the aesthetics. I give all the original credit to Takara for the original products, but man does Wei Jiang do a great upgrade to existing figures. Plus quality control seems top notch with Wei Jiang, Takara has been hit or miss for me unfortunately.
Can't wait to get the MPP-28 as my Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime (I might consider just painting a gray chin on him). I hate to say it, but I will pass on the FansToys Hoodlum because of this. I only have so much shelf space!

Agreed. Will be watching to see what size this turns out to be.

Ooh... love Wei Jiang, and I'll be watching this. I do worry about it being just a bit large for what I'm looking for. If the scale is relative to MPP-10, this would increase the size of Hot Rod to almost 11 inches. Taller than MP-09, taller than DX9 Carry, taller than MP-10. Still interested to see how this goes, though.

That does look tempting. Un-flatten the chest, shrink the backpack---that's all it really needed.

I seriously hope this is an oversized model, because that means I will be able to display my 2 favorite autobot with Robot Hero Oversized Starscream! Dreams do come true!

Sooooooo---Takara just needed like another pair of hinges, to the make the backpack fold up into half its size?

::edit:: Hmmn, they modded the lower legs, too. Possible that's where the orange "tail lights" go now?

Dude, these shots really show off how much of an improvement this may end up being. I'm crazy excited to see how this turns out.

2017 is gonna be the year of the ROD!! So many great-looking Hot Rod/Rodimus figs potentially coming out this year.

My only concern with these improvements is it hides more of the spoiler. This is a definite wait and watch to see how this turns out but I'm staying with Tak and hopefully if released, FT Hoodlum.

So is Black Apple's design process to begin with the standard figure, mod it up and have it oversized afterward? I ask because that is clearly the same figure. Mold seams and sprue marks are in the same places. Not sure if that has any bearing on whether the final product with be upsized or not but it's certainly not in those pictures.
Damn, if it's not upsized I'm gonna regret ordering that ko MP 28.

Dang why was this so hard for Takara to do?
