Toy Review - Unicron w/ Kranix Series - Transformers Platinum Edition Sub-line - Transformers The Movie 30th Anniversary Size/class - Supreme + Minicon Wave - n/a New/remould/redeco - redeco of 2011 25th Anniversary Unicron Approximate Size - 37cm (Unicron), 5cm (Kranix) Allegiance - Decepticon Alt-mode - Planet (Unicron), Moon (Kranix) Main Features/Gimmicks - Electronic lights, launching projectiles, can hold 30+ Minicons. Main Colours - Orange, blue, silver (Unicron), grey, red, orange (Kranix) Main Accessories - 6 small missiles, 1 large missile, 2 planet shell parts, 2 outer ring parts, Kranix. Packaging Photos: As with all of the Platinum Edition Movie 30th Anniversary figures / sets the packaging art on Unicron is fantastic, if only the boxes weren't so big it would be worth keeping all of these, kind of disappointed that I didn't. Package Contents: Along with the Unicron and Kranix figures, you also receive two bags containing instructions (two languages) and accessories. Kranix Figure: A redeco of the Dead End figure that came with the original Armada Unicron, Kranix is a mini-con that transforms into a "moon" or "armed sentry" for Unicron. Unicron Figure No real changes from the previous versions of the mold in terms of design or transformation. Assembly of the wings and outer rings is required, and the missiles need to be placed in position. The missiles are spring loaded and can be fired. Contains 4 x 1.5V A76 batteries to facilitate glowing eyes and a light up fist. Transformation: Transformation is advertised as 19 steps, about 5 of which are folding the hands into the arms, so really 13 or 14 steps. Essentially cross the arms in front, fold the legs back, join the outer ring parts together and attach the wings as the outer planet shell. The "planet" is flat on the bottom, not really ideal for those wanting a spherical planet but at least it sits nicely for display. There is a place on the front of the planet for Kranix to sit, and moving the horns in and out makes the "teeth/chomper" on top of the planet open and close. Overall: A Unicron figure that we've seen before, but an imposing figure nonetheless and a fine representation of the character - I suppose if it isn't broken there is no need to fix it. If you don't already have a Unicron then it would certainly be worth buying as long as the price is reasonable. Complete Platinum Edition Movie 30th Anniversary figure set:
Comparison pics with Armada Unicron: (30th Anniversary on left, Armada on right) EDIT: (Oops, just noticed the above pic is around the wrong way, Armada is on the left)
Love love love all the pictures. Good job. That said I'm interested to know if this deco is closer to the Amazon or Takara 2010 editions.
Tough call - I don't have either of those editions but to my eye it looks closer to the Amazon edition, the colours seem a lot more muted than the Takara Unicron.
I think you did good on the review. You did: 1. posted pictures of the figure in both robot and alternate mode, 2. did comparison pixs between this figure and the previous release. 3. gave a commentary on similarities/differences between this and the previous release.
Thank you for the feedback LigerPrime. I'm hoping to be able to add some more descriptive text next time along with the pictures, just worried that sometimes I may not know what I'm talking about
Unless my eyes are deceiving me, the 25th anniversary and 30th anniversary Unicron have different shades of blue, a darker and lighter shade on them
My 30th Anniversary Platinum Unicron survived a drop test today. He sits on top of my book shelf in planet mode but my wife accidentally caused him to fall to the floor and shatter into pieces. Surprisingly, I was able to put him back together and there was no damage at all. I guess because... UNICRON.
Awesome box. Seems like that's the only draw for anyone who already has either of the 25th anniversary toy versions.
I didn't realize this had a new head vs the Armada and Energon molds. Is it just me or are the colors very flat on this guy? The orange and light blue don't do the sculpted detail a lot of justice.
Not really liking the light grey-blue but I still love that G1 inspired headsculpt. I'd like to pick this up to replace my Armada version but I'm hoping he might show up down the road at places like TJ Maxx or Ross at a more affordable price.
Sold off my Armada Unicron back in 2007. Love this guy's deco and head sculpt much better. Only wish they would have given him a green light for his eyes.
All the back and forth trying to decide whether or not to go for the Haslab Unicron really got me appreciating just how cool and underrated the Platinum version is. I'm still undecided if I'll take the plunge on the big guy, but either way I'm glad to have this one.
After deciding that Haslab Unicron is just too big for my house and too pricey for my budget, I bit the bullet on the Platinum edition (of which will probably be as limited in number as the Haslab version - 8000+ is a pretty big number). The blue is a bit bright to me but the eyes are at least accurately green, which I believe is different from prior versions. Also, didn't spend $600 for him.
No Haslab. But it'll do. biggest complaints is that I can't get it into position to tab underneath the chompers and his right hip guard likes to pop off.
