Because Disney thinks a little Frozen is guaranteed to put butts on seats for this film. After all, it did work for Cinderella a few years back.
It not a short but a full 30 min Christmas special that was going to air on abc. Guess it's getting the pooh and the honey tree treatment and will be a big-screen featurette.
REVIEW: Coco Is A Vivid Tale of Life and Death... and Afterlife "Despite some snags in storytelling, Coco is a vivid tale of life and death and afterlife." Sounds like it's going to be fine.
"B+" Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 96% - "Coco's rich visual pleasures are matched by a thoughtful narrative that takes a family-friendly -- and deeply affecting -- approach to questions of culture, family, life, and death." Metacritic Score: 81 out of 100
Word out on the Mexican premiere of this film is that audiences complained about Olaf's Frozen Adventure being too long (21 minutes to be exact) for a Disney short, potentially hurting interest in Coco.
Yeah movie talk was complaining about the frozen featurette and that it was 20 min. Someone in the comments then told them that this was disneys 9th 30 min special in front of their films! (it's 10 not 9 so they got it wrong plus as pointed out the hour long dumbo was a bonus featurette in front of ride a wild pony! You had to wait a hour to get to the movie!) I wonder if those who saw the rescuers complained about mickeys Christmas carol or those who saw sword in the stone complained about pooh? Then again it could be boring. Then you can complain about how dull it is but you can't complain about it's time when Disney had hour long nature featurettes in front of their films. They have been doing this for years.
Folks are saying the short is kinda dull. That's not good. Looks like movie chains in mexico are pulling the short from showings! Note that this was planned as a Christmas special for tv and not a featurette, unlike the other shorts I listed that were made with movies in mind. Wonder if Disney will cut the short in the states?
No, but it does bring up the fact that this movie was in development before The Book of Life, and that it’s actually based on hispanic culture, not one persons idea.
Yeah, uh, about that. There are a grand total of two similarities between this movie and Book of Life, from what I've read. Those being, Spoiler 1. The main character is musically inclined, but his dreams are denied by his family. The difference with this one is that it apparently has something to do with an ancestor of his, not with bullfighting and looking down on music.. 2. The Day of the Dead...Well, it is one of the more well known Mexican holidays. The go to for whenever someone wants to portray Mexican culture. Is it overused in popular culture? Maybe, but Mexicans don't seem to mind. I'd say it would have to do considerably more to be called a ripoff.
So how long is Coco? I'm trying to avoid spoilers despite it look like Book of Life. With a 20 minute short in front of it, I'm going to guess it's probably like 80 minutes.
Frozen short didn't hurt coco at all! It's now the highest grossing movie in mexico of all time! ‘Coco’s Otherworldly Mexico Run Lands Pixar Toon As Market’s #1 Movie Ever
