Today I was at a common area at my university and I was overhearing a group of guys talking about transformers. It was bugging the hell out of me because they were so ignorant of the series.

Things I caught them saying is that:

    - Beast Wars is a animal line-for-line remake of G1

-Unicron is neutral unless you have a key to use him.

    -random movieverse stuff.

I didn't go over to them to teach them the mythology but it just irritated the hell outta me. Do you guys have stories of over hearing or being in a group that has it all group about Transformers?

and sorry if this is a duplicate topic-first time in this side of the forums.

I can't tell you how many people I know get Soundwave and Shockwave confused. Everyone calls Soundwave Shockwave. I can't even correct them anymore.

I posted on this topic in an earlier discussion. I teach middle school and with the movie and "Prime" being out, it's inevitable that the kids talk about TF's, and I love how they tell me about "The original Transformers" series, with some gems like "Bumblebee wasn't in the original show"...and others, you get the idea (maybe to them, the "original show" is Armada?)

It's always a fine line between. "Teaching them the facts" and "Being the anal fan who can't let one little faux pa slip by without reading the riot act to them."

I've corrected before... but then I was just shooting them down.

Any more I just nod my head for the sake of civility and hope that one day they re-watch it and correct themselves.

It aint worth getting worked up over.

Speaking of which, has anyone overheard stuff like "Transformers is gay" in a conversation, and then been heavily tempted to make Starscream or Knockout jokes at their expense?

I'm not really anal, but it kinda bugs me that most people's first reaction upon seeing any Japanese-y mech (i.e.: Gundam) is "Oh wow, a Transformer!"

I've also come across a lot of people who think anything mecha is "Gundam", but I guess it's just a form of association than anything else, or possibly a sense of brand domination like how people call any kind of tissues "Kleenex".

Correcting mythos of a vast undiscovered multiverse where in any one tapestry anything is possible as far as anyones imagination can carry it ie customs fan fiction art comics etc etc.... So to tell any one person they are wrong is in itself you being wrong because in some far reaching corner of the multiverse what they are talking about may in fact be reality. Besides its a cartoon we watch for enjoyment.

In other words everyone is always right

    LOL I teach high school
a lot of my students are wearing autobot and decepticon emblem shirt without even knowing they are wearing a transformers shirt!
I'd call one Autobot and I'd get this strange look back and I'm like your shirt? and he goes "oh yah I don't know what this is I just liked the way it looked"
WHAAAT WHAAT WHAAAAT!! (In the words of Kyle from South Park's mother)

To be honest, if somebody came up to me and butted randomly in a conversation without even knowing you were there and gave some super hardcore nerd-response I'd give you a punch in the face. No offense. You're taking it a bit far, people think what they want, they don't need some know-it-all correcting them.

I am going to highly doubt you'd have punched anyone in the face for that.

Somebody's done something similar to what I've explained before and I really wanted to punch him in the face.

Most people I know just ask me a lot of questions when/if TF comes up. The ones that state something like they know what they're talking about but are wrong usually clam up once I correct them. Overall though, while everyone knows that TF are sort of my thing when it comes to chosen nerd-vice, I generally keep it off the radar. I don't wear embarrassing TF clothing, I don't have figures displayed anywhere except my office, I don't have stupid faction symbol decals on my car, etc. The only outward giveaway is my DVD collection of the G1 series (both Rhino & Shout Factory) and Steelbooks of the movies, my iPhone home screen of the Autobot logo and maybe my computer desktop wallpaper.

But yeah, as someone else said, I too would never even think to correct random strangers having a misinformed conversation about TF either... not without expecting to get swiftly kicked in the head. If there's anything these forums have taught me, it's that there are a TON of people in the fandom that have no idea what they're talking about or are only here because of those awful movies, so the days of expecting anyone to actually be informed are long gone. Those people might be wrong, misinformed or even just outright stupid, but I wouldn't consider them ignorant as the OP said. The hardcore hair splitting turbo-nerd fans are far more ignorant than casual and/or spoon-fed newbie fans ever will be.
