Of course. Contrary to all the stupid debate, it was a sure thing that it'd be released both ways..

The format war was the primary reason that I was waiting to upgrade. Looks like I'll be getting a Blu-ray player sometime in the near future.

Now I think it's safe to say that "Sony bought out Paramount", rather than "Microsoft bought out Paramount".

    Heh.

Ditto! I never bought an HD DVD player, so I guess the HD Transformers Movie I bought in now just a "collectable" paperweight. :lol

Wow, I thought this whole format war thing would drag on for agggggggeeeeeeees.

Which makes Microsofts decision to base the Xbox360 on DVD a hell of a smart move. Microsoft? Good at business? Whoudathunk?

*starts eyeing up Blu-Ray players enviously*

Just pull the trigger Paramount. I'll still buy Transformers on Blu-Ray.

was this before or after Paramount said that they were committed to HD DVD at CES? I don't see how this is front page news.

That's a huge loophole in their contract. If they had that little confidence in HDDVD, why did they sign an exclusive contract in the first place?

Well the rumour has been denied by those involved.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aQMGgh2LV_bU&refer=japan

But to be honest, there is no smoke without fire and at this point, given the backing that Blu-ray is receiving and the momentum it has gained over HD-DVD, companies would be mad to stick to one format and even madder if they chose HD-DVD over Blu-ray.

Which is a shame as I had my eye on a nice Toshiba HD-DVD player.

Looks like I will have to get a PS3 now. Given that there are more games coming out for it that I want to play and Blu-ray is included in the box ;)

*sigh* I don't really care one way or the other on which HD format is better, I just don't like Sony. Any company that did what tried to get away with on their CD's a couple of years back I would avoid.

I knew that there was an escape clause. I knew Paramount wasn't that stupid. Of course they are going to back out. They have to if they want to make any money in the HD market over the next year. Cause no one is going to be buying HD-DVD's now that the format is official dead.

I wonder why Universal hasn't said anything yet. Interesting.

I'm gonna feel bad about calling my father to tell him this.

I'm guessing we'll only be watching "300," "Shooter," and "Transformers" at family gatherings for the next few years.
