Essentially it sounds as if they are waiting on profits - however given that TF;AOE is already destined to make around $100m on its opening weekend it'll likely get a sequel. They are probably just waiting on the films box office before they officially announce whether they plan a trilogy - even though their are plans for TF5.

    out of order in timeline.

producer did say this, but it was then later announced that they would start on the next one at some point.

Toys R us already leaked a while back that the next 2 movie's toy lines were in the works. So someone somwhere already had it planned as a trilogy. Dont let them fool you.

Yeah, everything we've heard about the film so far sounds as if it's definitely setting up sequels, so this news article could mean a couple of things:

    1) The studio is waiting to see how the film performs. I doubt this one, as everybody already knows that it's going to perform amazingly.

    2) The studio is waiting to see if they can indeed get Bay back on board for an additional 2 movies. If they can't, it might take longer than planned between this film and the next one and they could decide to reboot it with a new director. I find this more likely. There's only a handful of franchises that have actually kept the same director for more than 2 films. 3 films is unusual, 4 is definitely an outlier....5 and 6 would be nearly unprecedented (except for LotR and The Hobbit).

I kind of agree whether you mean that or not... but I do want to see the film franchise reach a sixth film (Hopefully with Unicron) so Bay can essentially do what he is best at doing (Wide scale explosions) and the franchise will be done to the point where a reboot is the only option. Then due to Bay doing everything humanly possible on Earth it will force the new series of movies to take place either in the past (Beast Wars style?), future (Transformers Cybertron style?) or space (Cybertron movie?)

    Toys R Us? :s

    Explain please?

we should all REALLY stop overanalyzing every statement about the franchise. First 3 movies: huge. AOE: tracking huge. There will be more movies.

agreed. Besides, they said the same thing about the last 2 movies lol. We see how badly ROTF got slammed and yet because of how well it did, they made another. There will for sure be at least 2 more before we get a total fresh reboot.
