This Rise Up tagline is corny as it gets. Like a 12 year old wearing a Che Guevera shirt or something. Hope the movies cool though.
It was cooler when Megatron shouted that tagline in TF Animated. "Decepticons, transform and rise up!"
So we have a promising young pilot disenfranchised into following an unesirable lifestyle before being called back to fulfill his potential when the Kaiju become too much to handle? Isn't that just the first movie's plot? Also, a "15-year-old Jaeger hacker." Oh boy, I'm sure that'll be... that'll be great. I mean, I'm cautiously optimistic but this is certainly curbing that optimism.
I thought the 1st film was alright. Maybe even good. But nothing that overly impressed me. Not sure how excited I am for the 2nd. I thought the idea of 2 pilots per mech was a stupid idea; I'm glad to see they are back down to a single pilot.
All I ask for is that the 3rd film have Jaegers vs evil Jaegers with Hannibal Chau in a supporting role as an anti-hero piloting a massive Kaiju-harvesting custom Jaeger. And I agree with Split, this is the same goddamn plot. I hope it turns out to be more than just the same.
I like the fact that we're seeing these mechs in daylight. DAYLIGHT. Last movie it was all either at night during a storm or underwater. ninja edit: that 15 seconds of Striker Eureka in daylight doesn't count.
That was a real problem for me. The fights are the only real reason to watch the movie, and they are all obscured by darkness, rain, or murky water.
I don't think "obscured" is the right word. All the fights were clear as day, regardless of if they were at night. You couldn't not see what was happening or anything. Thing is PR only had three major fights, and they all featured a mood. The movie opened with lots of uplifting, daylight footage of Jaegers standing proud, and the first fight showed the dark, dirty reality as the invincible Jaegers were shown to not be all that invincible. The middle fight was much the same, the best and most able were torn apart with the downpouring rain, which switched from dark and depressing as they died to more colourful and hopeful when Gipsy arrived and they moved into the brightly lit city without the weather changing. The Hong Kong fight was visually the most appealing to me, because the only light was from the multi-coloured signs and lights rather than pure brightness. Setting a scene at night or in a dark area means you have control over the lighting, and thus mood. The final battle was a figurative descent into hell. The dark, murky waters lit by the firey volcanic activity around them. The visual language and mood was present in each fight through the lighting and time of day/weather. Broad daylight fights don't really tell us anything, and can feel really flat and unremarkable. As a comparrison, the final fight in Power Rangers to me felt entirely boring as it just took place during the day. It was plain as hell to look at.
So what city is this? Hong Kong again? TF:A Bulkhead? Still drifting. This one makes them look like the stars of a direct-to-TV Disney movie about surfers saving the world.
