Has anyone used the fine detail plastic for Trentulas' face plates? If so, have you managed to paint it?

    I have!

When using fine detail, first you want to clean the part, make sure there's no support material left. I use a wood toothpick to scrape the insides of pits, then clean with a light spritz of general cleaner. from there it's all about acrylic in multiple thin coats. You can primer and sand, if you're a light touch with the primer. again, many thin coats.

The clear plastic? I did, back when Shapeways called it Frosted Ultra Detail.
I prefer the Fine Detail clear plastic over the "fuzzy" Versatile plastic Shapeways normally uses. It paints easily and if you have translucent paints, makes for a very great colored effect.

It largely depends on the type of item. where durability or flexibility are needed, or on large items, versatile is very useful. I like the colored dyed version for single-color keshi-style figures, and there are some tricks to painting it that won't produce the same look as painted fine detail, but produce nice looks regardless. I wouldn't recommend printing, for instance, a set of Prime Soundwave tentacles in detail plastic.

That paint technique, for those who are interested, is diluting acrylic paint with 90% rubbing alcohol and doing thin coats. The porous material soaks the color deep into the plastic, and after 5-10 very thin coats the paint settles into all the pores and smooths the surface for detail painting on top.

I wouldn't recommend it for faces or anything small as spraypaint can easily fill in detail. It's good for other things, generally larger and with less detail. For faces, I'd recommend thinned acrylic paint applied by brush. Sometimes I use the tip of a toothpick to paint in eyes.

    Full pic gallery here.

    Paleo-Riders Armor for Schleich Paleo-Models
The first two Dino-Riders homage armors for modern dino-toys are tested and up for sale (hand-painted Shapeways White Versatile plastic shown above). The first two releases are for the Schleich Dinogorgon and Schleich Oviraptor.

While neither Dinogorgon nor Oviraptor are particularly close to the Dino-Riders vague 1:24 scale, they can serve as standins for Inostrancevia and Hagryphus respectively.

If these two get a good response, a whole lot more of these are on the way.
