I suck at 3D rendering, but today I wanted to try and be better. I sat down and ended up with Optimus Prime's head. It's pretty terrible, but coming from a noob like me it could have turned out much worse.

Let me preface my statements by saying it looks good despite your layman's skills. From what I could guess of the wireframe by just looking at the shading, there is room for improvement. Specifically the scalp area (or whatever would classify as a scalp in this case). Despite the rough modeling job and the presentation (which you don't really need to concern yourself about just yet), I was able to recognize it as G1 Optimus Prime, and if that's what you were going for, nice job.

My 2 cents are to keep at it, keep practicing with the tools at your disposal, learn helpful techniques, and you'll be better at 3D for it in the long-run.
