There were two bearcats. I don’t remember which is which, but one of them refused to participate in segregated matches and was, in his own way, a civil rights figure.

Keith Lee is an intelligent and eloquent guy that is African-American. Maybe this is a gimmick for him to cut more intellectual promos about race and society, especially on the face of things like BLM and increased vigilance against police brutality……..and be more than another generic “angry big man” like most guys his size are cast as.

Of course, I haven’t seen him since the gimmick change and I’m sure Vince will call him Bearcat, let him do nothing but wrestle, and make him a generic angry big guy….. because Vince will never change and this product never improves

Interesting…I had no idea “bearcat” was a possible civil rights reference, and it actually makes another bearcat reference WWF made in the 90’s make more sense…

Some of y’all might recall that back when the Nation of Domination was formed, the group included the rapper tag team PG-13 who would rap lyrics to the Nation’s entrance music. The lyrics include: “Got power like the bear, but quick like the cat, put two and two together, feel your face on the mat”.

At the beginning, the NOD was not strictly a Black Panther Party-like group (originally they were based on the Nation of Islam) but it’s fascinating to think the lyrics referenced a 50’s wrestler who was a civil rights figure.

 

I remember NoD but to be honest I never those lyrics besides "We are the Nation! Of Domination!"

If i remember correctly, The Rock was a member of NoD after the Rocky Maivia gimmick fell through and then was kicked out of NoD, got pushed and the rest is history.

 

PG-13 (Wolfie D and JC Ice) were not in the Nation very long, so many people forget them. I personally only remember them having one televised match, and the rest of the short time they were in WWF they only came out rapping alongside the Nation.

Here’s where I get to flex my “WWF/E entrance music nerd” muscles:
The Nation theme WITH lyrics was actually released on CD but only in Europe, on an album called “We Gotta Wrestle”. This album preceded WWF The Music: Vol 2 by a couple months and includes a couple songs never released elsewhere, such as the first version of Sunny’s “I Know You Want Me” (with no Sunny voiceover).

Anyway, yeah the Nation started out with members like Clarence Mason, Crush, and Savio Vega. Then Crush and Vega were kicked out and formed their own stables, leading to the infamous Stable Wars we all enjoyed (read that last bit with just a hint of sarcasm)
