I don't know what you're talking about. I like Soundwave's voice, even without vocal. Mr. Bay Rules!!!

Allow me to break it down to the simplest terms... Soundwave Superior, Vocoder Inferior. (Besides it's easier to mimick Dr. Claw than it is Vocoder Soundwave.)

I recall saying while ROTF was shooting that I wouldn't mind if the voice wasn't processed, because when I hear Soundwave in my head while reading the comics, I hear the Dr. Claw voice, just as I recall dialogue from foreign movies in English due to my focusing on the subtitles.

It sounded stupid. Like some old guy making a gruff sound. They should've made it slightly metallicy. But Soundwave was glorious.

I'd argue the reverse is true. Anyone can do a voice that's vocoded. You don't need Welker at that point.

Soundwave's voice was the least of this movie's problems. One of the few good things in this shit pile.

The only reason to have added the vocoder is for pure fanwank. Adding the vocoder would have served ZERO other purpose. The huge majority of the audience is not familiar with the cartoon, much less Soundwave's voice, so they don't think it's a problem. That's not enough reason to go ahead and do it without a second thought.

Let's put it this way, how it happened:

Bay invites Welker to audition for Megatron. Welker does Megatron's voice, but as much as it suited G1 Megs, it doesn't quite match up with the movie portrayal. Bay tosses around the possibility of Welker using a different voice, but realizes that that would defeat the purpose of using him in the first place. So he says "Good job, but not what I'm looking for." Welker leaves without feeling insulted. 2 years later, he's contacted for Soundwave. His G1 voice fits, so they use it. The FX crew considers using the vocoder, but Bay is concerned that it may be too hard for the nonfan to understand, so he leaves Welker's performance largely untouched. Voila! ROTF Soundwave, complete with original vocal actor giving a near-identical performance to what his larynx did from 1984-1987.

    Understand?

He sounded sick and tired in the game.

Not bad considering but......Far from perfect.

I liked the voice. Would it have been cool to hear G1 Soundwave through there? Sure. But I don't think it lost anything. Just be thankful they (Bay) let Soundwave have speaking parts, and wasn't relegated to noise and subtitles.

I think in TF3 he should come down to earth and get injured in the face and maybe screwing up his voice card thing...Then he sounds like G1 Soundwave

    Man I can't think today :(

Crap. I entered this thread just to say that very same thing only to find someone else already said it in the second-to-last page. DANG!

But yeah, IMHO the game nails it 1000%.
    It's a mix of 60% the movie voice and 40% G1 voice.
    Total win.

I would have creamed my pants BADLY had he had that voice in the movie. :(

I find it incomprehensible about SW's voice. As if he doesn't get enough flak from members of the fanbase, he makes things worse by making an obvious, or ignorant, mistake. Was it just a 'mistake' like the Brawl/Devastator debacle?

This is something we'll die without getting an explanation for.
Bay allegedly wants to 'get Soundwave right' and please the fans, and he:
    - Doesn't give him a single red visor (he has two eyes in the movie)
    - Doesn't give him a faceplate.
    - Doesn't let him come to earth.
    - Doesn't give him proper robot or vehicle modes
    - Bothers hiring Welker only to not vocode his voice which is the whole point of Soundwave's voice. I mean, if you've tried a vocoder, you'll know anyone can do that voice acceptably. The vocoder wipes all trace of the voice and only leaves articulation on top of the metallic voice. The vocoder was more necessary than Welker to get the original Soundwave's voice done properly.

I mean, I could let go and really liked Soundwave in the movie.
He had a mysterious powerful evil to him.
But Bay really certainly did not make the logical best thing to do to please the fanbase.

What's up with the hate for his voice? I really liked it and thought it fitted his looks perfectly.
