Marvel:

Marvel Comics announced at this weekends Ny Comic Con news about many of its properties and upcoming projects. Here is a look at some of those:

Daredevil’s Matt Murdock goes to jail where bad things will happen. Storm and Black Panther will be married this year. Expect one hell of a bachelor party for Panther. Amazing Spiderman 529, with the first appearance of his new armor type costume, quickly sold out, and look for the Punisher to make an appearance back in the regular Marvel Universe during Cival War.

Top Cow has teamed up with Marvel in a talent-sharing agreement. Under this agreement look for things like, artist Tyler Kirkman working on Amazing Spiderman while Marc Silvestri will be working on a huge (secret) project at the end of the year. In other staffing news, Mike Deodato takes over the art for issues 16-20 on the New Avengers line.

John Romita Jr. has re-signed exclusively with Marvel. He will start work on a new Eternals project with Neil Gainman after he finishes up with the Sentry limited series. Neil and John hope to really be able to tie the Eternals into the rest of the Marvel Universe, giving readers a chance to see what the Eternals are really all about. John also has another big project coming up with Marvel. Unfortunately, details about the project remain under wraps until this summer.

Jae Lee and Stephen King will be doing Dark Tower in 2007, while Peter David has been signed to an exclusive contract witg Marvel. Look from Peter a Wonder Man mini-series, while continuing his work on Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman, and X-Factor. Jon Watson signs an exclusive with Marvel doing several cover projects in the coming months.

Marvel is doing a couple Cival War mini-series to go along with the 7-issue main event. Frontlines will help encompass all the action going on around the Marvel U, that they just couldn't fit in the main title. Also while the Young Avengers series goes on hiatus, Runaways and Young Avengers team up in limited series that gets the Young Avengers really involved with Cival War. Finally look for a Pulse-type issue done up like the Daily Bugle for Cival War.

In X-Men news there will be a new title launching this year called GenNext, which will be written by longtime X-writer Chris Claremont. Chosen by the fans, it explores the question, “What if X-men aged in real time?” Surprises are loaded in this title, baisically ignoring everything that happened in the 90's this title will be focusing on thing like what if the X-men had offspring. Due out in June 2006. Watch for possible appearances of characters outside the X-man world as well in this.

If your not reading it already, be sure to grab the X-Men: Deadly Genesis limited series, which leads directly into Uncanny X-men where Ed Brubaker and Billy Tan take over in issue 475. Watch for Exiles issues 84-87 to see Wolverine depicted in a manner not seen for some time.

Waiting for mutants who lost their powers in House of M to regain them? Keep waiting… Even though it appears Polaris will be getting a costume update, It’s not gonna happen. But what might? House of M and its aftermath has generated a fear that resonates throughout the entire super-human community in the Marvel Universe. Governments begin contemplating an expansion of the Mutant Registration Act to all super-humans. Joe Qusada asks, “What would it be like if sentinels had to watch over everyong – not just mutants?”

In other news, Joe Qusada, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, is entertaining the idea of an alternate series of Marvel Apes. Is he serious, or was he joking? Only time will tell.

Civil War will also see Nick Fury come above ground. X-Factor issues 8 & 9 tie into this mini-series and sees the return of Quicksilver. Stay tuned to CNI for more Cival War news coming out of the Ny Comic Con. All we can say is, poor New Warriors.

More Marvel:

At the New York Comic-con on Saturday, Marvel held a panel discussion on the upcoming Civil War event. Though not a lot of details were disclosed as to what the long-term consequences will be for our heroes, a broad outline of the event was provided, as well as some clues as to the things we will see.

The panel was lead by Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada. Also present were Brian Michael Bendis, Tom Brevoort, Ramon Becks, Dan Slott, Steve McNiven and Dexter Vines. The Civil War kicks off with Spider-Man 529 in a story where Peter Parker finds himself in Washington, addressing congress. It wasn’t clear whether it will be Parker or Spider-Man speaking, however this sets the scene for the Super-Human Registration Act, an expansion of the on-going Mutant Registration efforts by the government.

The heroes of the Marvel Universe are forced to take sides on this very controversial issue. Friends will battle friends and teams will be ripped apart. The essential question, highly relevant to the events of the day, is where the balance lies between society’s need for safety and the individual’s need for personal freedom. Quesada promises that both sides of this divisive issue will be presented even-handedly.

The first issue of Civil War is due in stores May 3, 2006. There will be seven issues all together. In addition, there will be a second series, Civil War: Front Line, which will tell smaller stories about the fallout from the event in the main line. This 10 issue series will come out twice a month in a 32 page book with no ads. Most of the regular lines will also you start to panic about how much all this will cost your wallet, Bendis promises that the main Civil War comic can be read as self-contained series.

The biggest changes appear to be coming to the New Avengers. Bendis said that the current team will be dissolved in a 5 issue New Avengers Disassembled arc. Once everything is resolved, there will then be a brand new team starting in issue #25.

Just about all the main Marvel characters will be involved. The New Avengers and Spider-Man of course play a central part as does Wolverine. The Fantastic Four will be torn apart in many ways. Spider-Woman, She-Hulk and the New Warriors are also seriously effected. Cable, Deadpool, Dare Devil, Thunderbolts and the Punisher also play a part.

The Civil War is the culmination of several different stories currently running the Marvel titles. The pending actions by the government are the reason why Nick Fury went underground and the Hulk was exiled from the planet.

Will the Sentinels start to police the super-humans along with the mutants? Quesada wouldn’t say but he was the one who asked the question. And what are the super-villains doing while the heroes are at war? Some will apparently be taking sides also, in exchange for pardons. Others will seize the opportunity for their own ends.

Some new books will come out of the resolution of the Civil War. No specific titles were announced, though Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel were hinted at. The panel also announced that Hawk-Eye will be back. In addition, there will be some big change for Alpha Flight.

The only part of the Marvel Universe that won’t feel a lot of impact are the X-Men titles. It was suggested that they might actually be off-planet will the Civil War is going on. There will however be a 4 issue limited series where the X-Men will be dealing with the impact of the war. Other characters not involved are Apocalypse, Moon Knight and Next Wave.

DC:

DC held a panel session at the Comic Con where they outlined the upcoming plans for their 2006 lines. The panel was lead by the Senior VP-Executive Editor for DC, Dan DiDio. Some of the talent also present were brothers Adam and Andy Kubert, Phil Jimenez, Brad Meltzer, Paul Levity and Jeff Jones. Though tight lipped about most of the details, the two major events of 2006 that the panel revealed were 52 and One Year Later.

In a comics first, the 52 series will appear weekly in stores, starting in mid-May. There are four writers who will be working collaberatively on each issue. The series starts in mid-May and will continue for 52 two weeks. The story takes place over one year of the characters lives. All that was revealed about the story line is that major changes will be coming for a lot of prominent characters.

One Year Later takes place, as the title suggests, one year after the events of Infinity Crisis. The major events of this series, which were also not disclosed, will lead to a whole host of changes in the on-going titles. Additionally, several new series will be launched. The comic lines effected include Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, JSA, Teen Titans, Titans East, Outsiders, Aquaman Sword of Atlantis, Hawkgirl, The Green Lantern Corps, Ion, Green Arrow, Supergirl and Supergirl and the Legion of Super-heroes.

Hawkgirl will be done by Howard Chaykin and Walt Simpson. When asked whether Hawkman will be involved, all the panel would say is that the title is "Hawkgirl." Ion is a Green Lantern book. The Titans East is some kind of new team of heroes whom the Teen Titans aren't too happy about. The panel also said that "the Outsiders don't exist anyomore" even though their title will continue.

Also continuing are the All-Star Batman and Robin and Superman comics. There are no plans at this point to add any more heroes to the All-Star line. This summer will see a Batman and The Spirit limited series which will lead into a new solo book for The Spirit. Superman will also be receiving the Cover to Cover treatment, as Batman did recently.
The final issue of Sgt. Rock Prophecy will be out in June.

Adam Kubert, who is doing the Action Comics series, said that he will be incorporating Superman's movie look into his comic, though not his continuity. It was also revealed that by the end of One Year Later, there will be only one Flash in the DC Universe, though of course the panel would not say who that will be. They did however announce that there will be big changes coming up for Firestorm, including that he will soon be attached to a new person. Hourman will also be effected in some kind of serious way by the upcoming events.

Perhaps the biggest announcement is that there will soon be a new roster for the JLA. Brad Meltzer, who is writing the comic, said that for him Identity Crisis #1 (which he also wrote) was bascially JLA #1. The story lines will flow from that. He wouldn't give any hints as to who will be on the new team, except that there is one prominent person missing from the recent poster of the team.

Other titles that were mentioned were Checkmate, due in April, who will also be featured in 52 along with the Suicide Squad. Shadowcat, who has some big revelation coming up, Secret Six, which follows from Villains United, and the Blue Beetle. The Crisis Aftermath series will include the Spectre, Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters and the Battle for Bloodhaven.

The last new item that the panel revealed is the upcoming Brave New World title. This will only cost $1 and will offer readers previews of all the other upcoming comics.

More DC:

The New York Comic-con would not have been complete without a DC panel announcing upcoming DCU books, especially in the aftermath of “Infinite Crisis” and the “One Year Later” books.

The hall was packed with faithful and enthusiastic DC fans as they gathered for “DCU: Better Than Ever” not only to get the dirt on new books but also to watch the guests enact what’s essentially a jolly sitcom known as “Life at the DC offices”, which they delivered in spades.

The panel consisted of Dan Didio, Bob Wayne, Paul Levitz, Joan Hilty, and artists Adam and Andy Kubert, Daniel Lacuna, Al Barrellevio and Jesus Saiz, with writers Geoff Johns and Brad Meltzer showing up a little late, probably caught up on the temporary shutting out of further attendees from the con due to oversubscription and crowding.

Bob Wayne reeled off a quick succession of upcoming Spring titles, accompanied by a slideshow of cover artwork.

Didio ribbed Levitz into announcing himself as the writer of “JSA: One Year Later” for six issues.

Didio talked about how, when planning 52”, Geoff Johns was “schumck enough to consider writing the whole series himself”, and Levitz offered to fill in for one or two issues of “JSA” for him if he got overwhelmed. Then it turned out Johns wasn’t writing all of “52” after all.

“So why am I writing it??” asked Levitz.

“…” was Johns’ reply.

“He doesn’t know either!” cried Levitz.

Brad Meltzer was confirmed as the writer of the new “Justice League of America”, started with #1 debuting in July, with Ed Benes on pencils.

“’Identity Crisis’ in my brain was always ‘Justice league of America’ #1” said Meltzer. “This is a League with history, and it’ll embrace what it was before and do something new with it.”

Bob Wayne proceeded to reel off new “One Year Later” titles like an increasingly hallucinatory stream of consciousness:

“Checkmate” written by Greg Rucka debuts in Spring, along with the new ongoing “Shadowpact” book and “Secret Six” written by Gail Simone.

A new “Blue Beetle” will debut, written by Keith Giffen and John Rogers, with Cully Hamner on art.

“Crisis Aftermath: The Spectre” begins in May, written by Will Pfeifer and art by Cliff Chiang.

“Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters” will be drawn by Daniel Lacuna. “80-Page Giant: Brave New World” will carry a price tag of $1.

The new “Martian Manhunter” series will be penciled by Al Barrelluvio.

“Wonder Woman #1” has Allan Heinberg writing.

“Flash #1” by the writers of the “Flash” TV series Paul de Meo and Danny Bilson, with Ken Lashley on art. Editor Joan Hilty teased the audience by stating that there won’t be multiple Flashes anymore, but the Flash at the start of #1 may not be the Flash that the series ends up with.

“JSA” will be written by Paul Levitz with art by Rags Morales and others.

Geoff Jonhs will introduce Titans East in “Teen Titans”, and the main character will not be pleased that a group called Titans East exists.

“Outsiders” will return, though Judd Winick had said the team really “doesn’t exist anymore” to pique readers’ curiosity.

“Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis” will by Kurt Busiek and Butch Guice. “Hawkgirl” will be by a pair of “newcomers” named Walt Simonson and Howard Chaykin. “Green Lantern Corps” will be a new monthly by Dave Gibbons and Patrick Gleason.

Ron Marz returns to on post-Crisis Kyle Rayner in “Ion”.

“Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes” by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson.

“Supergirl” will feature the new Nightwing and Flamebird, by Greg Rucka and Ian Churchill.

The movie adaptation of “V for Vendetta” will open on March 17th and “Superman Returns” on June 30th.

“Superman” will have a six-issue arc co-written by Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns, drawn by Pete Woods, followed by Busiek writing and Carlos Pacheco on art.

“Action Comics” will be written by a mystery writer and drawn by Adam Kubert.

“Seven Soldiers of Victory #1” arrives in April, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by JH Williams, concluding the epic storyline and revealing which character won’t survive.

“Sgt. Rock #6” by Joe Kubert concludes the series in June.

“Batman” and “Detective Comics” will have an 8-issue arc written by James Robinson, after which “Batman” will be written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Andy Kubert, and “Detective Comics” by acclaimed TV writer Paul Dini and drawn by Rags Morales.

In summer, “Batman and The Spirit” by Jeph Loeb and Darwyn Cooke will pave the way for the ongoing “Spirit” book written and drawn by Cooke.

Didio took over the microphone as ringmaster of rapid-fire replies to questions from the fans:

John Stewart has a big role next year, and may or may not still be a Green Lantern.

Geoff Johns has big plans for Damage.

Anarky will appear in “52”.

The status of Speedy, who has been MIA, will be revealed in “Green Arrow”.

Plastic Man will officially return to the DCU after Kyle Baker’s run on the book, though there are currently no plans to reintegrate him yet.

Johns and Hilty hinted that Suicide Squad will return and overlap with “Checkmate” especially now that Amanda Waller is in that book.

In “JSA”, Levitz hints that Rex Tyler aka Hourman will see big changes in his life, and there will be a new revelation about Wildcat.

Asked if the Superman comics will feature a smaller “S” from the movie, Andy Kubert said he would not be ignoring it. Didio reaffirmed that the Superman books will adhere to their own continuity rather than try to emulate the movie’s look.

Johns said there would be more appearances by Starman and Starboy.

Didio revealed that Firestorm will be in “52”, but he has major events occurring in his own book, and he would be bound to Lorraine Riley, which surprised many fans.

“It’s One Year Later.” Teased Didio.

Bob Wayne denied there would be a sequel to “New Frontier” as Darwyn Cooke is too busy on “The Spirit”, but hinted that there would be an Absolute edition of “New Frontier” and action figures (the latter of which is already available for pre-order).

George Perez has postponed work on the Teen Titans graphic novel “Games” in order to draw “The Brave and the Bold” written by Mark Waid.

Conor Hawke, the son of Green Arrow, will be getting his own miniseries.

Bob Wayne announced that more “Legion of Superheroes Archives” were due, and Didio ribbed Levitz by reminding him that Levitz’ original run would finally be collected. Levitz visibly blanched and said, “You have to remember that I was really, really young and should have been allowed to do it…”

Jess McCann will write a “Krypto” miniseries based on the Cartoon Network series.

onClick="flexPop(620,400)" target="PopUp"> A fan praised DC for doing a better job at making comics than Marvel (though a Marvel fan would certainly disagree), and Levitz said DC was not about “beating Marvel” per se, but simply to make better comics. He credited the new sense of excitement and unity to Didio’s background in television programming, bringing his perspective to comics. Previously, editors didn’t think of the big picture when dealing with their own books, and Didio has changed the atmosphere, putting the editorial and creative teams together to make the universe tighter.

Levitz credits Didio with implementing so many ideas he had thought was impossible, like signing the Kubert brothers to the company, or ideas Levitz thought were terrible, like launching a new “Omac” series that was actually successful.

“I had a cake made in the shape of a crow,” said Levitz. “So I could be seen eating it in front of Dan.”

Overall, Levitz was very pleased that the mood at DC was now one of excitement no unlike that of the 80s when great works were being produced and the office was abuzz with receiving new pages for “The Dark Knight Returns”, “Watchmen” and “Killing Joke”, and the sense of surprise and excitement could be felt by the readers as well.

Finally, when asked if the Atom (Ray Palmer) was coming back, Didio turned to Meltzer, who held up a t-shirt that read: "I got my mind wiped by Zatanna, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!"

I might check out the new Spirit series, but Spirit without Eisner has always lacked the magic touch that made it great.

More Legion Archives? Its probably cheaper to buy the contents of them in orginals by now, but I wont grudge them since no-cost volumes like that bankroll the restoration work for stuff that really does need doing.

Last I heard the arc was: Something falls into the Midwest and it has Reed spooked. Item is Thor's Hammer and the person holding it looks like my namesake (bout time he returned!).

Seriously, FF better be getting better soon. Past arc was lackluster at best. Thing reasoning with Hulk, Reed & Sue nearly losing the kids, and nothing about Johnny.... Too much attempt at Drama not enought CLOBBERIN' TIME!
