Strictly speaking, I don't think Nintendo owns the Wonderful 101 copyright anymore. I checked the credits for both versions online, and references to Nintendo (including copyright notices) were removed in the multiplatform release.

The studio said they asked nintendo if they could port it and nintendo said yes so nintendo had some say or nintendo no longer owns it and the game studio was just being polite.

    Edit--

So sounds like yes they had to get nintendos ok. Same with fatal frame.

Yeah, Nintendo co-owns Fatal Frame last I heard. Likely due to both W101 and Fatal Frame having co-ownership with other partners and being smaller, more obscure franchises in comparison, Nintendo were more lenient on allowing those on other platforms

iirc, they still let the first 2 or 3 Fatal Frame games on PSN

There's been rumors and rumblings about Nintendo co-owning Fatal Frame to some extent, but nothing official to my knowledge. But just like with Wonderful 101, all references to Nintendo having any kind of rights were excised in the credits. Case in point:

Wii U: Nintendo and KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. are the authors of this software for the purpose of copyright.
Multiplatform: KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. are the authors of this software for the purpose of copyright.
(And yes, it's capitalized like that in the credits themselves.)

It really seems more like a publisher deal for both games/series to me at this point; any rights they had then are gone now for one reason or another. Nintendo probably owned Wonderful 101 previously, and they may have had some rights with regard to Fatal Frame at some point. But having themselves completely left off the credits really doesn't seem like something even a partial copyright holder would do, especially not these days and especially not Nintendo. Whatever deals or ownerships they may (or may not) have had seem to be over now.

Edit: And just for reference, Sony is still credit as copyright holder for God of War on the PC version.

Missed/forgot about that. My bad. However, by all indications Nintendo has given up their say.

Let me put it this way: do you think Nintendo, probably the most ardent defenders of their IP and copyright in the industry, would allow themselves to be removed from copyright notices if they had any real ownership of the related series?

Some IP probably aren’t as big of a priority for them, especially if someone else has a say in it. It’s a big read why that unofficial Mother 4 Fangame still hasn’t been taken down

Not being a big priority wouldn't keep them from doing something as simple as putting their name on a game's credits if they actually owned the IP. Let alone actively removing their name. I really just don't buy that Nintendo actually currently own Wonderful 101 or Fatal Frame in any capacity if their names aren't on the credits/copyright notices of the most recent releases. Certainly they seem to have had a publishing deals (in the case of Fatal Frame) which often accompany ownership, but those aren't necessarily permanent and don't always accompany IP ownership (especially with pre-existing series like Fatal Frame). Remember that Sony published the early Spyro games but the series was able to go multiplatform because Sony didn't actually own either Insomniac or the Spyro franchise at the time.

Also, which Mother 4 fan game? The old one that's been in development for several years got a name change and is being reworked to be less obvious about being a fan game last I heard (I think they even plan on selling it). The other one I think only got announced a few weeks or months ago.

As someone already said, Platinum still needed Nintendo’s permission to release W101 elsewhere on the grounds that they fund it themselves(though there’s also some speculation that Platinum relinquished full rights of Astral Chain in exchange for W101 given Platinum’s name no longer appears in the promotional material for AC), and if the owners of Fatal Frame is saying Nintendo still has a say in the future of the franchise I’d say that’s a good indication of the franchise’s ownership(especially since the article posted is only a year old)

As for the Mother 4 fangame, it’s most likely the former, but even when that was still a Mother 4, Itoi still gave it his blessing

I can't agree regarding ownership. Again, if they owned it (i.e. are copyright holders), even partially, they'd appear in the copyright notification. Nintendo's not just going to forget that. Certainly there is or was some publishing agreement if effect (which obviously isn't all-encompassing; Nintendo didn't publish the multiplatform version of Fatal Frame 5; maybe right to first refusal?), but again that doesn't automatically mean they have ownership of the franchise. Control of some kind isn't the same as ownership. Plenty of games and series have had publishing agreements with specific companies, even console manufacturers, only to move on later. Bayonetta is an example; Nintendo has some kind of rights with regard to entries past the first, but last I checked Sega still owns the IP itself.

Also, being a year old isn't that convincing since that was before the ports of Fatal Frame 5 were announced (late July 2021). The article mentioned has information from over a year before that (April 2020; see: Fatal Frame's Return Is Up To Nintendo, Says Series Producer Keisuke Kikuchi Also note that he mentions Nintendo in this article as publishers for the series, not owners, and Koei Tecmo has since published without them). I.e. that information is nearly two years old at this point.

If the momentum keeps up, then the switch will become either Nintendo’s second best selling handheld or their best selling console overall.
