I feel largely the same way - I appreciate Roche's ability but I'm not personally crazy about the way some of the characters are rendered. Rodimus and Drift in particular. I find it a little distracting when they appear this way.

That said, I think the way he renders characters like Swerve, Ultra Magnus, and Tail Gate to be fantastic. It's almost like he's employing two different styles. I don't get it.

Love it love it love it. Transformers comics are readable again and they're better than ever. I just wish Brainstorm was there...

Hopefully there's not a reason that Brainstorm isn't there :(

Looks even more awesome in color. I would completely buy that and frame it. Awesome art. :)

-ZacWilliam, if he were rich, would just pay Nick to do a cast shot of every year of TF toys year by year. LOVE all the character and personality he brings to it.

    I find this style refreshing!
Nick is putting his own stamp on the art.... and as long as its expressive and the story telling is good, I'm not complaining!

I like that IDW is experimenting with different art styles and takes on these characters.

Honestly I do prefer Nick's art from lsotw but I feel that this comic wouldn't the same without this style Nick and Milne are using, it adds so much more characterization to the story and you feel like you are reading about characters, so basically I've seen better art but this style is one of the many things that make this comic special

This will go nicely with Nick's Overlord print from last year. :)

Reminds me why each issue of IDW MTME has head shots with names on the back cover--- because most of the characters are beyond recognition. Oh how I miss AHM.

Other than Rodimus and Ultra Magnus, I don't recognize any of the characters. LOL

Wow. I've NEVER liked Hot Rod/Rodimus. Even as a little kid in the 80's, my Rodimus Prime toy was always getting captured and killed by Decepticons, because the other Autobots refused to save him because he was the reason Optimus Prime died. 20+ years later, I STILL blame him, and don't like him! I laughed my butt off in TF: Animated, when Rodimus was the "Last 'Bot Standing" against an armada of Decepticons... I imagined a horribly slow death for him. LOL

I'll be honest.... I ain't a fan of this at all.

I don't hate Nick's work, but his art style is one of those "there is a time and a place for it"

I rather have Alex Milne do a group shot like this.

Funny, because I recognise every single one. This isn't the movies for God's sake, they're not completely different. They all look like who they're supposed to.

It's funny how the best TF fiction employs styles and designs that are removed from G1 aesthetic, and comics that generally fall in line with the traditional aesthetic are bland and forgettable, isn't it?

    I wonder if there's a connection.

You miss shit stories and shit characters with shit designs ripped off from the toys and cartoon meant to pander to the masses?

People really don't know good quality when they see it.

Oh, so everyone's face can be identical and all have generic expressions?

I wish all TF fiction was rendered like this. Maybe then TFs wouldn't seem so boring 90% of the time.

No offense that has to be ENTIRELY YOU being ignorant and not knowing your TF characters and has nothing to go with the art. Yeah, they're drawn a little bit cartoony as is Roche's style but they ALL look like who they are still. If you can't recognize Swerve or Whirl, Rewind, Ratchet or Cyclonus or the rest here you don't know your G1 TFs end of story. Even one of the most redesigned like Chromedome is in his very distinctive colors and has his toy exact toy head.

As for Roche's style, he DOES have one, so I don't expect everyone to love it. Different folks have different taste. I LOVE it because it's very dynamic and the characters look fun and full of life and personality. His characters are all eminently expressive and that's wonderful. It brings them to life in a warm, fun, exciting way.

I would certainly take this over the (blech) Move aesthetic everyday for eternity.

-ZacWilliam, also many folks are exaggerating how stylized this pic is. Really look at it. Rodimus, Drift, and maybe Cyclonus are the most stylized, EVERYONE ELSE in the picture looks just as blocky and square and classically robotic as G1 Transformers always do.
