Not gonna lie: This guy would make the perfect chug Shockwave if he was a voyager.
    Here is hoping it happens.

Because I am an insane person, I removed Shockwave's eye piece, sanded it, primed it, airbrushed it yellow (with a hint of orange) and then topcoated it with matte topcoat.

    Results later.

I’ll end up doing the same if I modify mine, I’m too OCD to paint it without removing it first

If you aren't too fussy, just touch the eye with a paint pen. One second. Done.

You might be a little crazy, but it did turn out superb. Well done, sir. Well done. :)  I just did the stalk, not the entire block. I didn't want the paint thickness to be an issue upon re-insertion.

This looks ace. I don’t have an airbrush but I think I’ll go the tamiya spray paint route seeing this.

Thanks for all the compliments guys! I've always gone way too hard on this sort of thing, but the results speak for themselves.

As for matching the paint - I'm not sure. I'm not exactly a skilled hand at paint matching, but it would be easy enough to just grab some primed scrap plastic and sit there testing it. Only problem is I'd probably want to pull the eye back out which might scratch the paint, even through the topcoat.

I opted for the EX version and just received it from ShowZ. I haven't opened it yet though so I can't say if I like how they did the eye or not.

Just curious because I want to do this right; what exactly does sanding do for the piece versus just painting over it? Does it help the paint stick better? And also, is matte topcoat different than say Tamiya flat clear coat?

Sanding it was partially for clearance and partially for adhesion. Things stick better on sanded plastic, but also, I wanted to make sure the eye fit back through the hole without scraping after all the layers of paint!

And I think for topcoats, they're the same - I use Mr. Hobby UV Cut Flat Matte, which is functionally the same I think. Just don't lay it on too thick!

Ah, I see - glad I asked! I will take these tips and try the same once mine comes in. Never even thought of the clearance part. Thanks so much for the help here!
