Not to turn this into a HG bashing thread, but; Why are we stuck with them as distributor? Highest bidder situation, or what?
I don't know how the bidding process went, but we're stuck with them because Studio Nue, Big West, and Tatsunoko all neglected to set any conditions for the license to expire.
I like the idea of new Macross, but if it follows anything beyond the 80's Robotech show, then I'm going to be completely lost.
You'd likely be a little lost anyway, as Robotech and the original Macross don't quite line up, especially near the end. Thankfully, the sequels have all been fairly self-contained stories. They're set in the same universe, so you can infer some fun, inessential connections to the larger timeline if you've seen the other shows. But anything you absolutely need to know will be explained in the series you're watching. It should be safe to just jump in anywhere. That said, there are also fansubs available for each series. My recommended viewing order is: Macross Zero Super Dimension Fortress Macross Macross: Do You Remember Love** Macross Plus Macross 7 Macross 7: The Galaxy is Calling Me Macross Dynamite 7 Macross Frontier Macross Delta **It's not strictly part of the "canon" timeline but the later series still reference it. SDF Macross is the canonical version of events, but DYRL has the canonical versions of how the U.N. Spacy, Zentradi, and Protoculture are supposed to be. So it's sort of like Beast Wars where the "true" G1 timeline is an amalgam. Everything besides the above is effectively bonus material or an alternate universe.
We used to watch a bootleg copy of Macross '84 summer when we were kids. I remember we loved it, but it wasn't dubbed in english so we could only guess at what they were saying. I think we were more impressed with naked Minmei more than anything else.
It's been rumored, and the show could probably use it. It would be weird having to use a new voice for Hikaru though.
They would probably use an all new cast for the remake (unless the picture I saw of Iijima Mari in Japan was for it) they did it with Yamato 2199.
^Includes Macross II There's no Macross anime that I'd recommend not watching. The others just don't fit anywhere in the main chronology.
First Orchestra Concert Featuring "Macross" Music to be Held on September 17 This year marks the 35th anniversary of the long-running sci-fi mecha anime franchise and the 10th anniversary of the death of Kentaro Haneda, the composer of the OP and ED songs of the TV series and the soundtrack music for both TV and film. Kenataro Haneda is one of my favourite Japanese composers. His career in TV/films was too short IMO, but he was a concert artist and a music teacher, so he didn't have too much time to spare. His Macross scores are one of his best works IMO. And Macross is defined by its great music and giant robots. No one is more deserving of a concert than Macross, and Mr Haneda.
