Sorry if this is a repost.. tried to do a search.

    http://in.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idINIndia-31335720080110

It looks pretty cool and can do approx. 50 mpg

Not sure how it is in terms of speed though..

People think it may rock the car prices of competitors

And just a few moments ago, I could this article about how there's already protests IN India about a factory being used to produce the Tata Nano..

Apparently, the land was forcibly taken from the farmers there..

    http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9848763-7.html?tag=nefd.top

I wonder if/when it'll come to the states or anywhere else for that matter.

I think safety standards here will prevent it from being release in the US.

This is going to be great for a lot of people in 3rd world countries. This is going to allow people to own cars that were never able to afford them before.

I highly doubt it will affect any other car manufacturer, at least here in the U.S., because these cars have only the basic necessities. It gets you from point A to point B, thats it.

When I look into getting a car, price is secondary to the model I want, and what extra's are available. I think this sentiment carries over to many in the same position as myself.

    Everyone is so enlightening.

I have no idea of the specs of this car.. but you're probably right.

I think I read they made this to substitute scooters

It would be a good car to own for a student on a budget.

I know, I love little cars like this. I just like little cars in general. My Beetle looks like a Hummer compared to them. Plus you can't beat the price!

That was one big issue that I heard.

The big thing that would keep it from making it over here is a top speed lower than interstate speeds.

I'm surprised no one else has brought it up yet. With India, one of the most densely populated regions in the world acquiring these cheap automobiles, expect another spike in gas prices. Even though they get 50 mpg, there's still going to be that many more people in need of more gasoline.

I would buy one if I could fit in it.....dont know the specs, but I'm 6'5"...so yeah if it would hold me comfortably, I would get it in a heartbeat...

With gas expected to top $3.40 a gallon this spring (at least thats what they are predicting for Mi.) this little car would come in handy....it would be a nice little work commute car...

One could really save some money for more important stuff....like Transformers!! :D

Sounds like the Bodacious Tata is running a 600-cc parallel twin? The scooters and motorbikes these are supposed to be replacing, what kind of mileage do they usually get? I know over here they pull down furious numbers but those are the Japanese and Italian ones built in factories where they are on speaking terms with tolerances. If most people who buy these are replacing sputtering little two-strokes it might not be too bad of a punch to the oil supply. [/wishful thinking]

They had a report about this on BBC world service the other night when I was driving home from work and this is exactly what they were talking about, they said it was a much safer alternative to scooters. Evidently it's not too uncommon of a sight to see an entire family of 4 or 5 piled on to a scooter in India.

Looks about as safe as driving a soapbox derby car in rush hour traffic.

Sounds about right. I know back in the day, we used to seat about 7 or 8 in an Auto Rickshaw, like this one:
