I just recently purchased an SNES controller with USB so I can use it on my computer. Rather than buying a bunch of old cartridges that can add up, this would allow me to play these games on my computer.

Now I need your help. What is the best emulators out there for the NES and SNES?

Thanks. I downloaded Jnes and it works great. Had to find games elsewhere though. I got Contra, but can't get the 30 lives code to work. :(  I'm too rusty at this game to make it through on only 3 lives.

I've always preferred ZSNES over SNES9X. SNES9X is rather bare bones. ZSNES has some nice graphics smoothing options.

I was actually going to just post ZSNES as my preferred SNES emulator.

Also, there's Zbattle which lets you play ZSNES online with people. It's great.

With Nintendo, I've always used Nesticle.

ZSNES is the best emulator for SNES. I have myself USB Super Famicom controllers. Totally cool :)  Also my PC is hooked up to the TV. So, only thing missing is blowing the cartridges :lol

I recently got into this myself. I am using ZSNES and Jnes

It is so amazing being able to go back and play those games from when I was a kid. I have been playing games I never thought I would get a chance to again.

I remember ZSNES being better developed back in the day, but I was under the impression Snes9x and it were pretty much on par now. Snes9x, for as long as I can remember, had graphics smoothing -- you mean like the SuperEagle filters and whatnot?

If you have a Wii, then that's super easy to get pretty much any emulator running on it, so long as it's not updated to the newer firmwares yet. Even then, there's still a way to get the homebrew channel on there. My Wii's been setup since the day I bought it. NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Gameboy, Game Gear, MAME, MSX, Intellevision, Colecovision, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Neo Geo Pocket and Color.

If you have a smartphone, I totally recommend superGNES.

There is. Retrousb sells the Powerpak, which has a cardslot to upload every SNES game and will let you play it on the original SNES. There's also some higher end paks as well out there. I'm looking to pick one up soon.

I've used mostly every single emulator and I found these two to be the best.

Zsnes is the best emulator for the SNES.
VirtuaNES is the best emulator for the NES.

    I don't have a Wii. :(

Btw, what game is that in your sig? I looks like that dude punched a hooker and kidnapped her. Not surprising in modern games, but that looks like 80's graphics. Did they put stuff like that in games back then?

I'm currently playing the translated version of Seiken Densetsu 3 :)
Without emulators we wouldn't be able to play this game and I really don't understand why Squaresoft did not release this game officially as a western release. I love these games :)

I'm even playing my PS2 games now with PCSX2, because my PC is a lot more silent than my real PS2 and I can play the games in a higher resolution which makes the games look a lot better than on a real PS2. I got a Memor32 memory card and installed a custom firmware onto it, so I could boot into a filemanager and copy my save games from my memory cards onto USB and use them on my PC.

There is so much cool stuff out there to relive the old games on PC.

Am I the only one here who prefers to play with an original console and cartridge?

No, I'd prefer that as well. It's just far more expensive to try to acquire the games.

    Rules

4a: Emulation That is the emulators themselves like ZSNES. Yes talk about them all you want, share links do as you please.

4b: ROMs: This is shadier territory. You want to talk about them, say you have them, discuss legality, anything just fine.

There's only one line we draw on emulation. Don't provide direct links to ROMs or ROM sites. Same as our MP3 policy really.

Of course the exception is Public Domain ROMs that don't belong to game companies such as Pong clones made by fans and freely distributed online. Such can be found at the definitive emulation website Zophar's Domain
