Looking for helping from sending a letter from US to PT.

I'm sending my friend some digimon cards to PT, and I understand the format and can easily google that. The problem is, and we both aren't sure about how this is.

His address shows he lives on 1st, but in PT it's primero, which he says is 1º like with that little degree symbol. I'm a little nervous to send it like that? Because here if you say that, you'd think it's 10.
Can I write it as 1st and not 1º and it will still get there?

Just hoping someone out there has sent mail to Portugal or lives there and has received international mail might know.

In Spanish, the “o” is to indicate that it’s not “uno”, but “primero”. The “o” being the last letter (it’d be “a” if it’s “primera”). The grammatical way to avoid confusing it with ten is to put a period after the number, immediately followed by the letter (no spaces).
Just read that it’s the same for Portuguese: primero - Diccionario Español-Portugués WordReference.com
Maybe, I should post this in the TIL thread.

Oh, so the º is actually a letter and not a degree symbol?! I think I get it now, thank you! I'll write it with the period and keep the little "o" like you said.
