My used 160GB PS3 is refusing to play any of my physical retail game bluray discs. I think it's the bluray drive/laser, but not 100% sure. Anyways, I was hoping someone here could help me solve the issue please? Preferably without having to spend any money, I'll be broke until July 26th.
Ya there is no way to do this without losing money unless you bought it recently and you can return it. You most likely need someone to repair it and at that point it might be better to just buy a new one. At least your system boots you should make a save a back up of game saves on a flash drive.
My mom bought my 160GB Slim PS3 used (pre-owned/second hand) from a random seller on Amazon Marketplace in 2011, so unfortunately I can't just return it to Sony and get it fixed or replaced for free. Hopefully it is just the BluRay laser though, as I've heard it's alot more costly to replace the actual bluray drive. @bignick1693: I'd buy another PS3, if I weren't already saving up my money for a Xbox 360 and Wii U this year, a PSVita and 3DS in 2015, a PS4 in 2016, and finally a XB1 in 2017. (I don't have a job or social security, so I have to rely on my family and friends for money)
I have several disabilities that currently impede me from finding a job/work. (none of them are physical though) Anyways, can you help me fix my PS3? Any advice would be appreciated.
Now I'm curious as to what your disabilities are if you're physically able to work. Even radio had a job as a lawn boy.
I have repaired consoles before and my advice is buy a new console. Each ps3 is made to have a special pairing with it blu ray drive so you can't simply just buy a new one and pop it in. To calibrate and pair a disc drive it is a tedious and annoying process. Between parts and fee for labor you are best to go out and buy a new console.
My bluray laser drive went out last year. $90 for repairs. Initially, I tried to do it myself and very quickly realized - not so much. For me it was worth the money. My ps3 is approx 5yrs old, and gets used everyday.
I had a RL friend take a look at my PS3, and it seems that it is indeed the bluray laser that's malfunctioning, not the bluray drive, DVD laser, or anything else. I plan on having him repair it, as soon as I can save up $30 Amazon in August to buy the replacement bluray laser. I could buy it this weekend instead, but I would like to buy three more PS3 games before I have to start saving money.
I'm honestly more of a game collector now than a game player. I do still try to play a game for a few hours every day or two though.
Even collecting, what will those games do for you just sitting on a shelf unusable? Put your money towards fixing your ps3 first.
Update: I had my friend look at my 160GB Slim PS3 again, and apparently it's either the Blu-Ray drive itself that's malfunctioning, which will cost me $80 New on eBay, or it's the HDD, in which case I'm hoping just formatting it and re-installing the PS3 OS will fix the problem. If it is the HDD and formatting/reinstalling doesn't work, I have my eyes set on a 500GB Western Digital for only $50 New on Amazon. I just hope they're not both malfunctioning, I can't afford to spend $130 all at once.
This is gonna sound stupid, but my XB360 routinely craps out on me (especially on new games), but all I need to do to fix it it run a laser cleaner disc. Have you tried cleaning the laser with one of those CD cleaner discs that have a couple of brushes and a dab of cleaning solution?
My friend already tried cleaning the laser lens, but I do appreciate that you are trying to help, so thank you .
