I often find that techno, electronica, and (especially) industrial music fits the best. Industrial music really fits because it's both very mechanical and organic at the same time - just like Transformers! Also, a good, hard rock or metal song doesn't hurt.

I also like a blend of techno and orchestral for Transformers, but rarely straight orchestral. Orchestral music simply doesn't have the right texture for Transformers. If one has the Rhino DVD of Transformers: the Movie, Vince DiCola discusses this just a bit (and I totally agree with him).

Speaking of Mr. DiCola, I really think his work fits well with "Transformers" as a brand (i.e., not just that particular movie).

    Symphonic Industrial. Period. :)

Strings & horns create the larger than life epic feeling, and gritty electronic synth lines backed by pulsing bass lines, giant kicks & beats, and mechanical sound sampling give everything a 'machine' feeling. All combined - nothing but win... if done right. Think Jablonsky or Zimmer styled scores just with more of an audible beat and structure combined with the instrumental power of, I don't know, bands like FLA, Combichrist, KMFDM or even VNV and the heavier side of Deadmau5 in some cases. That's my ideal 'Transformers sound'.
