I swear I'm the only guy who still thinks Brainstorm is good. Also, I still support my Megatron's Spark theory.
I am hoping he's still good (or at least redeemable), but it feels like a cop out for Brainstorm to be Batman-ing everyone. "All part of the uber-plan..." That's why I suspect Institute Shadowplay tinkering or something headmaster-y to come along and allow us to keep the Brainstorm we all love. Inteestingly - thematically - it seems like Roberts knew he wanted to redeem Megs and this was how to do it to a degree in the readers' eyes. So we've seen how bad the functionist council was (and potentially could be in the present) if Megatron didn't start the great war. The means certainly don't justify the ends, but this definitely paints a Megatron whose heart was in the right place to start and paved his road to hell. Roberts is basically doing the "if you could go back in time and kill hitler, would you/should you" story
Now now, the war was the resault of a number of socio-political issues that had been building for some time. Much like how even if the Archduke hadn't been assainated something was still going to give in Europe.
i hope next issue focuses on brainwave so we can see whats running through his mind the last few issues
These last two issues feel like they're mostly there to set up other stuff, possibly for later stories. The Functionist issue was a real wham, but last issue and this one are mainly showing the pattern of Brainstorm's travels and the like, this issue especially showing things we'd seem but from different angles. Next issue will hopefully be the one that really answers questions.
This issue kept me on the edge of my seat. It's just insane how many threads are converging it made the reading experience oh so exhilarating. Just a related blurb from MTMTE #28: Now we know why he "don't' recall"...
I'm surprised I got 13 pages in, and no one has commented on the gun that Brainstorm is pointing at Proto-Megatron's Spark. It's clearly a Walther P38-ish aproximation, minus the scope. Just sayin'. Also, I fully expect Brainstorm to pull off his own head and replace it with one of the Functionalist Council's heads for a big reveal. Which will spur 3rd party/Shapeways alternate head options.
Past Rung lives on to become our Rung. Our Rung then travels back in time, gets separated from the others and doesn't return to the present with them. In the intervening years he becomes Vos. The clue is there in this issue: Rodimus keeps forgetting they took Rung with them. It wouldn't surprise me if the entire DJD were hidden in this issue in their past forms, especially the nobody who Whirl shot.
Why the hell would RUNG, of all 'bots, turn traitor and start hunting Autobots, though? He's a pacifist.
IIRC a lot of people made that connection when the cover of #38 was revealed until someone, I think it was Alex Milne, confirmed that the similarities were unintentional. I don't necessarily think he's good, but I've always thought he's trying to do what he thinks will benefit everyone in the long run and the Decepticon face-plate is a big Red Herring. A bit of an Anti-Hero.
I checked the cover after reading your post and I don't buy Alex's reply at all. It's too obvious to be a concidence. Beautiful art by the way, very similar to Shockwave's 'All Are Dead' cover.
That was tripping balls. I also agree that I bet the Megatron shell has it's spark replaced with Megatron's 0.1% spark since all other events thus far have been of the imutable time theory. In fact, if this is true, what if it means Megatron doesn't know he's a 0.1%? He's being constructed cold, but part way into his creation the nobody spark is replaced with Megatron's? And if he's never told, he may never believe he's forged.
Damn you Tailgate and your need for curly straws! And just like the other recent books this one is still full of little cameos appearances, like our own little Where's Waldo of Transformers characters.
That's a really weak motivation when he knows the stakes are high and he knows there's a chance they could be left behind.
