So after missing around with my old Lego the other day I thought I'd test the waters and see if I could make this work.
I'm currently building a mp scale Cosmos and wanted a Beachcomber to go with him and Warpath. I kept looking over his design and realised he is quite boxy so came up with a plan to make him from different chunks of hacksawed plastic, a few spare ball joints I had and similar ankle rocker as Cosmos.
Then after noticing I had loads of these funny little yellow ball joint things in my old Lego I could use them with more Lego to make the build and joints more secure than just gluing bits on here and there.

Problem was I didn't have the other ends of the ball joints so what I did was bit experimental, I joined enough thin bits of Lego together so the ball joints just fit in the hole I left then melted down the corners to a round edge for movement.
Then melted down the Lego nub inside the hole a little to fully fit the ball end in but give max movement finally flooded the hole with hot glue and pushed in the ball joint to create the shape and kept moving to all the positions required for articulation until the glue had set.
Happy to say it worked and managed to create the socket the ball joint needed with what I had available.
The next evening I cracked on withers the other limbs, the only ones I didn't use this method on was his knees for these I found some other different ball joints and used some base socket leftover from some big fists cut down as need the other hang for the back of knee bend they were a bit loose but a touch of super glue did the job to stiffen them up.

Run down on the articulation ankle rocker and backward tilt, ball joint knees, thighs, elbows, shoulders, waist, head rotation also looking to put small pins in for hand rotation see how it goes.

Glued the Lego pieces together for more stability and will melt down the nubs to add another layer of plastic and his details over the top, the face and hands will be made from modelling putty.

I have 2 spare sets of matching wheels foc Blaster or generations Ironhide but personally I think blasters are more the right size with him being a dune buggy and looking at the Hasbro legends I'm using to model him off. Will update this thread as I go, for some reason i can never just have one custom going at a time lol 5 on the go at the moment Beachcomber_%28G1_cartoon%29.jpg download.jpeg.jpg 20200514_222150.jpg Screenshot_20200410-232331_Samsung Internet.jpg 20200514_222023.jpg images.jpeg.jpg 20200514_222015.jpg Screenshot_20200510-015638_Samsung Internet.jpg 20200514_222007.jpg Screenshot_20200512-212241_YouTube.jpg 20200514_231414.jpg 20200514_222459.jpg 20200514_222429.jpg 20200514_222344.jpg Screenshot_20191027-193214_eBay.jpg 20200513_003355.jpg 20200513_003326.jpg 20200513_003309.jpg 20200514_231421.jpg 20200514_221951.jpg 20200514_231443.jpg c2ae10ad645452f620f8c6aad2bd0591.png

Mainly worked on his shape tonight and some details, bloody lost one of blasters wheels how I dont know, ether way decided looking at the animation pics again his wheels are a lot smaller anyway maybe they shrink down when he transforms to robot?
Added heel spurs as well as he was struggling to stand without leaning forward slightly that does my nut in when figures do that. 20200520_013502.jpg 20200520_013448.jpg 20200520_013537.jpg

This is coming along nicely. The details look really good for scratchbuilt! I am surprised though that nobody else noticed the episode of Gotham playing in the background of those first few pictures...

Haha I was wondering if anyone noticed that! I wanted to watch it when it first came out but missed it, so started it on Netflix a while back. I'm in the last season now really enjoying, love how the classic bad guys and girls are slowly built up towards the start of Batman, the gore in it is insane! Cant wait to see how they wrap it all up in the end.

Thanks for the kind words on Beachcomber I was a bit gutted when the putty went off working on his head as wanted more details hopefully be able to file in some more later before painting. I would of started the other way round head first then worked my way down but didn't want to accidentally squish the face while doing the legs. Next time will just mix up a bit of putty as I go rather than the whole lot. I re did the face 3 times trying to get his features more on point.

The ball joint sockets I created are ok but not great as the hot glue sets quite rubber like so wont take a lot of weight so dont want to risk any putty to fill in the gaps on his arms or he wont be able to hold any posses with them. Last night I had the thought next time to use the hard setting putty to make the ball joint socket should work better then. Dont mind the extra weight from the putty on his legs as its keeping him more stable like die cast in feet.

After filing in some more details and cleaning I got the 1st coat of paint on. Instead of grey I'm using gunmetal as an under coat then tommorow I'll high light those areas with chrome and some lighter blue details. 20200605_024649.jpg 20200605_024525.jpg 20200605_024430.jpg

Ironic that the pacifist Autobot is being painted in gunmetal...

The darker color scheme looks good scaled up, instead of just copying the original colors

Looking at him now bearing in mind I'm going over with some lighter colours later the blue has come out really dark despite mixing some sky blue into it the dark blue?
The reason I went with gun metal is I've run out of white and have very black left to mix up grey so liking the metallic paint zeta toys used on there Seaspray I thought I'd try a couple of gun metal/ chrome to give him a bit more flash. Looking forward to getting him finished tonight still I think sky blue is just to light but without white I'm a bit limited. Need a restock on my paints

And hes finished here ate some comparisons with the rest of the season 2 cast including my recent Cosmos. Hes a little bigger than wanted but otherwise pretty happy with him 20200606_024843.jpg 20200606_142618.jpg 20200606_024804.jpg 20200606_142605.jpg 20200606_142546.jpg 20200606_143701.jpg 20200606_142455.jpg 20200606_143558.jpg 20200606_143224.jpg 20200606_143122.jpg 20200606_142701.jpg 20200606_142633.jpg 20200606_142443.jpg 20200606_143454.jpg 20200606_142421.jpg 20200606_143350.jpg 20200606_143325.jpg
