Yeah, that’s what I thought when I saw this new face. It doesn’t look quite right on Smokescreen and doesn’t have a G1 feel to me. The puny shoulder cannons, while toon accurate, look too small.

I’m actually pretty happy with the original MP-19 and unless there are some unrevealed accessories that entice me I think I’ll skip this one.

Smokescreen was my first G1 carbot and so I’m partial to him, but I feel like the original MP release was a perfect balance between toon and toy, which suits my MP Smokescreen needs.

You make a good point. While the huge face is accurate to a certain Transformers animation, is not accurate to the right Transformers animation. The Animated art had a far more exaggerated and cartoony style, more in keeping with kids animation of its era. G1, while it’s animation had flaws, attempted to stick to realistic proportions and features.
This face doesn’t fit at all with the G1 proportional look. Really hoping that it comes with extra faces that “fit” the look better.

 

Indeed! Plenty content with my MP-19 as is. I would like to see alt mode shots of this guy though.

 

Looking at the G1 character model for Smokescreen, this version’s face isn’t as far off as it seems. I’m thinking one reason it looks so odd is the shadows that are being created by the lighting in this display.

I’m interested in the alt mode shots too. There’s a slim chance I could break down and get this, but it’s very slim at this point.

Really looking forward to this guy. I sold all my original MP carbots when it became clear Takara were going to be doing cartoon + releases (which was fine by me), so will be good to get Smokescreen back in my collection.

I get people's complaints about the chin, it does look huge (although more or less accurate to the character model). I would add the caveat that we haven't seen full high-res official photos yet that may better display any definition/ angles to the face that breaks up the endless expanse of chin. So until then I think final judgement should be reserved (applicable to just about every low-medium resolution photo reveal ever). Even as is, I'm still on board with this guy.

I still think that chin is much longer than it needs to be, but I know it'll look fine with the open mouths.

From the top-down view we get a good look at the little gap we can put our fingernail in to swap out the faces:




@HolyCulture made a really great point about how the smaller shoulder launchers make Smokescreen look bigger and stockier than before, just like his animation model.

I'll be adding MP-19+ to this year's bounty for sure. The question is, will I also be adding MP-33 and MP-14+...

 

Hey @ambitron, any chance you'd be up for doing another face tracing for Smokescreen? Maybe it'd be better to wait for clearer or better-angled photos though.

No problem! It's difficult to see whether he has the curves around the helmet edges from the photos so far, and also to trace the lines on the face, but here's the best I could do from a couple of photos courtesy of @Gamerlingual:



He's a bit more frown-y and heroic than in the cartoon, but I love it.  

 

Oh man awesome, thank you! I felt the chin looked a little long for the sake of the open mouth faces, but the length looks perfect in the tracing!

 

I absolutely love this new face sculpt, it's so OTT, cartoony and almost ridiculous it actually looks amazing how TT have nailed the look. Don't want it enough to buy it now but I'll probably get it on sale!


Hmmm.....I spy with my crooked eye but it seems like you'll be able to change faces from the looks of the pic below....

Good to see this traced to show how accurate the sculpt is. The width of the nose is what really sells it. I posit that if Bumblebee had a similar wider nose as Smokescreen here then his sculpt would improve.

 

Awesome work, taken just as a line drawing really sells how accurate it actually is to the cartoon.
