The budget for the line was cut so severely due to the sales drop at that point they had to use what existed to make due. I think it was year they couldn’t even get new heads. That’s part of the charm of those designs. Then they never even got made. I can attest at that point, I aged out and didn’t care about He-Man anymore. I didn’t like the movie and that didn’t help matters. I didn’t even buy any of the last wave with Randor. NES was eating all my money.
I get it the reasons. And I was happy to accept it with other figures, MOTU was always very reuse heavy. I just think these look so un-MOTU for some reason.
It would make sense that they'd look "un-MotU" because action figures had changed a lot in style since 1982. TMNT took the XTREME style that MotU pioneered a step further by making it more radical, sewery and teenly so it's not strange that the designers would try something different in the face of stiff competition and drastically flagging sales.
i think part of the reason that people dislike the 88 stuff is because its only been depicted in black and white art, with no figures or colour artwork. if there were full paintings or prototypes, people would probably be more accepting of them.
I am very curious to see what Origins does with the colors, given that's been one area where Origins gets more "original". I expect Plasmar especially to differ from Classics as Classics Plasmar was rather muted and un-toyetic. Ditto Strobo. There's really only so many ways to color Slamurai and Snake Trooper unless the vintage Slamurai was meant to be red or something. Do you think people would be more accepting of the Monogram characters, aka Fighting Foe Men since we actually did get color vintage designs?
I do want to see the 1988 line but I also want to see some NA get sprinkled in soon too. An origins Hydron, Kato, and slush head would be awesome
Photog is one that needs to happen since the promise in the vintage line never happened. Mattel had rights to him signed over during Classics. Looks like a MOTU Bearbrick is the next MC exclusive. People have speculated the 3 $ one was MOTU on the 27th.
As I recall, that was a working name for MOTU itself after Lords of Power that was reused for the Monogram characters. I'm not sure where the art is from but I'm pretty sure the designs were finalists in Classics' Create-a-Character contest, that Mattel owns them, and that they were in Classics mini-comics.
