I received a decent Masterverse haul from Target today. I got Stratos, Two-Bad (my 2nd), Bat-Lynn, Frosta and Roboto. Plus an extra Origins Ground Ripper for the hell of it.
My goodness it's been so damned long I'd practically forgotten this Line existed.........Roboto, Hero and Frankenfurter-Lynn finally on the way to me. Now to figure out what Deity requires a sacrifice to Actually get a Two-Bad on this sceptic Isle.
Target had a lot of inventory today; plenty of 2-bads, wave 1 figures, lots of robotos, and there were a ton of Beast Man deluxe, king grayskulls, and trapjaws on clearance for 9 bucks.
I switched to collecting the MV line after dumping Origins and selling off what I had. (Mainly due to poor distribution, shelf warmers, and missing key characters. This was before Mattel released reissues of those characters). I only started out wanting a few (40th He-Man, Man-At-Arms (first release), Classic Teela, Hordak, and She-Ra) but it's grown alot since then to the point where I picked up Two-Bad, Stratos, and Roboto from Target last week. I think Two-Bad is my favorite to date with all the detail they put in and even making one leg longer than the other was a nice touch. I decided to stick with mainly old classic versions of MOTU MV figures or else I would go nuts on this line. I'm fine with picking up N.E. figures since they are essentially the classic versions with alternate accessories but I have also picked up a few Revalations style figures since they are a close enough fit (Revelations Battle Cat, Man-At-Arms first release, Moss Man, Evil Lynn first release since I kinda like this look more than the original style, and the upcoming Revelations Sorceress).
I've decided to concentrate on this line and let origins go. You get more bang for your buck with these.
I think Origins is cool but at the end of the day I decided to drop it for the same reason I don't really collect G1 toys or O-Ring GI Joe. I love the franchise but I don't actually care for the old toys. I'd much prefer modern toys with modern engineering. Origins is simply just vintage with new POAs but other than that isn't much else. The fact that the new articulation means that cool action gimmicks had to be left behind also leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I'm looking at you Tung Lashor, Leech and Mekaneck. Had all three as a kid, and it's a shame that their Origins figures aren't as fun as the vintage ones. So I'm only getting Origins with action features. But Masterverse is everything I love. Yeah there's no action features but Masterverse isn't trying to BE vintage figures and that's okay for me. The sculpting, detail, articulation and quality of accessories that these figures come with is more than enough to win me over.
That was one other issue I had with Origins. Extra articulation is cool but I hate it when it sacrifices the action features you mentioned. In addition to the ones you listed, I hated it that King Hiss has become a parts-former. I know they couldn't have the snake form hidden under panels and keep the Origins level articulation but seeing it in person, it just didn't have the same charm as the original. I don't know if it was because the older Groundripper mold was lost or what but seeing it without the ripcord feature was also a bit of a letdown. One other thing I have been loving about Masterverse over Origins is the uniqueness between the different characters. In the vintage line and Origins most (not all granted) of the figures share the same exact body mold. But Masterverse most of the figures are more unique and just not a carbon copy of each other with just new heads and accessories only.
Im honestly surprised what with that extra chest armor they didnt put him in a deluxe box and ask $35 for NA He-Man.
It's funny. Thanks to vehicles, playsets, and character selection, I've done the reverse. However, I still want: Classic Evil-Lyn, Classic Mer-Man, Blue Faker, Classic Orko, Ram Man, Sorceress, Shadow Weaver, and Panthor to round out my Masterverse collection. Maybe Pighead and NA Skeletor/He-Man. And I'll dip back in for any 87 movie characters. I think Blade and Pigboy have a decent shot, being in Revelation. And Saurod, being in the Revelation prequel comic. But I'm down for any they do. Whereas I'm essentially getting at least one of anything in Origins except minicomics or 200x variants.
They probably knew it'd be a very poor seller if they tried it. I POd two of them for roughly $15 a piece thanks to a sale and that was good for me. If they tried charging $32 or more i'd have to be convinced to buy even one.
