You could use the software for updating the iPod from there site (iPodSetup) but you will have to plug it into a wall socket to finish the wipe.

Alternativly when you link your iTunes library to the iPod from your PC it should wipe of all his songs and upload yours.

Well I have a brand new problem. I got a usb cable for it and I am under the impression that it will charge the ipod from a usb 2 port. Well I have it connected, and was luckly able to update the software, but it tells me to connect it to a charger. Even the ipod is showing me a pic of it plugging into a wall socket. ANy thoughts on this at all??

When you sync it with iTunes the first time it will automatically wipe everything, because you won't have his songs in your iTunes library.

As far as not charging, you've got me there. Is the port a powered one? iPod charging has been hit and miss with non-powered USB hubs and ports. It works for some people and not others. It MIGHT be possible that older iPods could only charge through Firewire, but I'm not sure on that count.

Well I do know that my usb ports are all 2.0 and are powered. It is the first edition mini as it does not have the storage size engraved on the back. So maybe you DO have to charge via firewire.....? I'm gonna try and update my usb drivers, see if that helps

I'm able to charge my 4th gen just fine via USB. I don't think it'll charge during transfers, but in idle it should. Try updating the drivers and see what happens.

I did update the drivers on my home pc and when i plug in the usb cable nothing happens. All I get is the image of having to plug it into a power outlet on the ipod. I just brought it into work and plugged it into my usb 2 port here and the same thing happened. I guess I have to buy a charger..... :mad

You are not the first with this problem. The way it was described to me is that there is not enough "stable"power from usb 1 or 2 to charge an older iPod. But I know firewire always works. Sorry to not be of much help here.

Well I did find a travel charger on ebay. It's just an ac adapter at one end that plugs into a wall, and then the other end plugs into the ipod. I really hope this works and that I dont have to buy a firewire cable and charger on top of all of this.
