"Listen closely. Is that thunder? Or voices? Or the opening chords for the end of worlds? The monsters are coming." -Grant Morrison Small Update on Page 3 I've recently gone into sculpting as part of my art portfolio and lo and behold, I decided to sculpt a T. rex. Now, I've done lurking around the interwebs and recently discovered the amazing art of Mukesh Singh and his work on Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens. I was inspired by his unique take on the designs of the dinosaurs and I decided to also dress my Tyrannosaurus in tribal getup though I'll take more visual cues from other tribal cultures instead of the Native American/Mesoamerican influences present in Mukesh's dinosaurs. This particular Tyrannosaurus that I'm sculpting is the leader of a Tyrannosaur clan. I started with an armature of foil and wire embedded in a wooden stand. The basic shape. I bulked it up a little after taking this picture because the visible ribs made it look anorexic. Texture work Now, I really need comments and criticism on the texture, as I think I'm really inconsistent with my method. Size(DOTM Sideswipe for scale) Scrapped: Comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.
holy shit, after the first pic with the metal goil, i thought "WTF should this be?" then i scrolled down, and my jaw dropped to the basement! WOW mindblowing art!
Wow! I'll second that! I wish I could sculpt that good, I'm sure mine would come looking like an evil Gumby's bad science experiment! Good work!
From one artist to another, excellent work. The sculpt is very smooth and the texture work looks very realistic. The proportions are also dead-on accurate.
Thanks everyone! Thanks. I like the Pachyrhinosaurus too, but I really didn't like using Original Sculpey because it sucked at staying together. I got rid of it. This was just some old wire I had a few years back, so I can't say for sure. If I had to guess, I'd say around 16-21.
I think the sculpting looks very good. The Bly help I can give is think about high traffic areas smaller scails will be in those zones. But it is looking good
Your attention to anatomy and musculature is amazing. Kudos there. As far as texture, you may want to go for something a bit more uniform under the somewhat (but nice looking!) scoring. Off the top of my head, maybe pick up some toy lizards, or even better, some stuffed/plasticized/mounted reptiles from a tourist store. You can then use these by pressing them into the media to replicate an actual scale/skin texture, to which you can add your scoring/muscle stressing textures for even more realism. As is now, the texture is obviously a hatching/stippling technique, and not a dead-on skin texture. Also, some research about dinosaur and reptile scale texture would give you some direction should you desire a more traditional skin replication technique. Please don't take these criticisms as a slight against your work. My initial degree was art/metallurgy, so it's habit to offer ideas for improvement (the only way to grow) for art. Really though, this is phenomenal work, and damned impressive for a portfolio. I can't see a model company not hiring you directly.
all in favor? " I " all opposed? *cricket chirp* motion carried. this thing is beautiful, and will get you a 186 out of 5 on the kick-ass scale. meeting is over.
Wow...please keep this updated, amazing work, the loose skin under his neck looks a little too adams apple esque, but the texture looks perfect!
