I only discovered yesterday that DL Grimlock was to be repainted as Overkill.

If it's official fiction, why can't repurposing count? It's just your opinion.

I have a nit picky aversion to molds being used for both Autobot and Decepticon characters. I like to think of the factions as having different body types since Bots are typically described as being domestic workers and Cons were for military use.

But I like some examples of them, in particular when it’s done as a sort of evil mirror counterpart. Like Siege Barricade from Prowl. Or some of the e-Hobby repaints like Bug Bite or Detritus.

Other times it just seems like a cheap and lazy re-use of molds though. Like the ROTF Knock Out mood which was used for both a Bot and a Con in that line. And then again used as a Bot in the 2010 line!

 

Because the thread title is "molds used for Autobots and Decepticons", and the original post explicitly asks "which transformers toys have been used for both Autobot and Decepticon characters?"

If it's only in fiction, it's neither a "toy" nor does it have a "mold". It's just an after-the-fact declaration. Hey, there was that Decepticon clone of Optimus Prime in the G1 episode "A Prime Problem", does that mean the G1 Optimus Prime toy was also used for a Decepticon?

Toys are sorted by the first Transformers line they were relesed under. Each character only counts once per toy (unless the factions differ between releases). For the sake of simplicity, I only count "Shattered Glass" characters if there have been no "regular" versions of these characters for the same toys, and even then, I count SG Autobots as "Autobots", and SG Decepticons as "Decepticons". My list, my rules. Sorry if you don't agree with my choices.


"Repurposing" only counts if it's done either on the toy itself (via factory-applied faction insignias, rubsigns etc.), or on the packaging, not through other media. So if, for example, Hasbro sells a toy as a Decepticon and Takara sells the same toy, without any changes to the colors, the deco or the tooling, as an Autobot, it counts; but if Fun Publications retroactively establishes that the Autobot toy previously sold by Hasbro under a different name is actually a separate Decepticon character, it doesn't count.
