    Howdy,

I've been working on this off and on for a while. I wanted to come up with a fully 3D printable modular action figure diorama system. The sizes of the components are intended to allow printing on a fairly standard-sized printer (250mm wide x 140mm deep x 150mm high). I don't know yet how I will release these designs. Don't worry...it won't be Shapeways...that would cost a kidney plus your first-born to assemble any sizable display using this design. I'll figure out something.

Anyway, the underpinnings of this first version are now complete. I would like to continue developing this system by adding alternative textures and accessories...but the basic system is at least functional at this point. BatMikey approved:

    PROTO.jpeg

The system consists of four primary components.

    1) Pillars: The pillars serve as the superstructure of the system (kind of like the I-beams in a skyscraper). They can stack on top of one another using short sections of bamboo skewer inserted into the 3mm holes provided. There are four flavors of pillar. A "straight" pillar for straight sections of wall, a "corner" pillar for 90-degree corners, a "tee" pillar for 3-way intersections and a "cross" pillar where there are connections coming from all four directions. The vertical slots along the sides accept the keyed edges of the wall panels.

    2) Wall Panels: The wall panels are keyed on the left and right sides and interlock with the vertical slots on the pillars. Right now, there are three flavors of wall panel: brick, brick with a door and brick with a window. You can also turn the plain brick panel around and use the smooth side for a smooth textured wall, if you like. I would like to produce alternative textures in the future (stone, wood, rock, metal, tech, cave, residential siding, etc.) to allow for different types of settings.

    WALL INTER.jpg

    3) Braces: Braces are used to tie adjacent pillars together and to provide support for floors and roof sections. There are two flavors of braces: simple braces for simply tying adjacent pillars together and support braces that tie adjacent pillars together AND provide additional support for floors and roof sections.

    4) Floor/Roof Sections: The orange panels shown in the pic immediately above are used for floors and roofs. There are currently three types of panels...the differences between each are based on where along the floor/roof the panel should be used (the panel sizes and cutouts at the corners are different on all three). Due to the size of each panel, I had to split each panel in half to make them printable on a "standard" 3D printer. The pic below shows the undersides of the split panels. Note the reinforcing ribs and the 3mm holes that can accept short sections of bamboo skewer to help lock the panels into place on top of the pillars.

    Stay tuned...more to come!

Hmmm. If this could be made compatible with Funbie studios cyberbase system. Would be awesome.

By Primus... if these were available at mass retail, I could build a skyscraper or two for the old collection... I would need at least enough to build a couple of eight- or nine-story buildings... and later on, you could introduce windows, and skylights, and balconies, and... ANYHOO... this is a brilliant design, pure genius! I will be watching this project with great interest. Great job!

Thanks man! As pictured, it’s actually pretty sturdy. I can pick up the whole thing by holding just one column! I have more ideas for it on the way!

Thanks man! The design really isn't complex at all. And it's sturdy. The toughest part is coming up a relatively simple system that can be expanded into complex structures and taking into account all of the different likely permutations a person might want to be able to build while still minimizing the number of different parts that need to be designed. I'm still working on painting the prototype...slowly...

This first version is painted now. The next step is to make some minor design revisions and then start in on some accessories to liven things up a little.

Minor update! I just came up with the first draft of a fire escape system. I’m gonna print the proto sometime this week to see how well it works. With minor changes, it could also serve as a simple balconey. More ideas on the horizon as well...

Thanks man! And yes, I hope to release them sooner rather than later. I just want to dress up a couple things and add a few more accessories before doing so. I’m not sure how I’ll release them, though. I need to look into those options.

Thanks man! I promise I’m actually going to get this out to people one way or the other.

And, if anyone has ideas for add-ons they would like to see, feel free to post them in this thread.
