Still one of my favorites of the pre-2000s CGI mecha series. The dub cut was hilarious too.

I need to rewatch Vandread. I remember enjoying it a ton back in the early 2000s, but I can't actually remember anything about it right now.
Still, more underrated old anime getting figures/kits these days makes me happy anyways; paves the way for other series.

That being said, how good is GSC with their Moderoid release schedules?
I'm waiting for the Final Battle Villkiss to get marked as "in-stock" at Anime-Export before I get my loot shipped; it was scheduled for Feb 2024 but I haven't seen any indication online that it has been released...

Man, I pre-ordered and paid for that Thunderjaw model in JULY and it's still just chilling in "Not Shipped" status at TFSource. I'm not usually one to complain but damn. Also, looks like I might end up splashing a little paint on him when I do get the damn kit. But it definitely looks cool even without!

I spent the morning hyping up my sister for her successful PHD defense, and immediately thought "DYNAZENON."

So I took a short break from the Real Grade Perfect Strike I'm working my way through in the Gunpla thread, and walked into the labyrinth of clipping and sorting parts that need paint, and began painting.

    20240315_105430.jpg

The one main reason I've held back on this one is the demand for paint. I hate stickers.

    20240315_114000.jpg

The obvious starts with black and yellow.

    20240315_223208.jpg

I cheated by not priming first, but I managed to get away with it to some degree. The wings will definitely need a second coat to smooth over.

    20240315_113418.jpg

Trying to apply the yellow into the deep recesses first got sloppy when I followed up by painting the black surfaces above it.
Once I did a second coat of black, I reapplied my yellow with a trim brush and filled in the corners and let the paint dry.

    20240315_223110.jpg

A quick scrubbing with a cotton point around the edges, and some arctic blue metallic in the center jewel later, and that gives me a solid starting point.

I also went around the prepainted yellow areas like on the Dynawing and helmet to touch up the sloppy work they already did before I could.

    20240315_104745.jpg

I will especially repaint over the prepainted pale blue/white areas with a mix I had put aside for it. Those eyes also are getting an upgrade while I contend with the headlights on the hands and windshield for the Dynastriker, and lights on the nose of the Dynadiver.

    20240315_223338.jpg

Once I get through painting everything, building the DYNAZENON will be the easiest step.

EDIT: Somehow last night I scored the Gridman (Universe Fighter) X Big Goldburn set on Ebay for less than $60 USD.

It was an SSSS kit pile today. Two at the work bench and one in the mail.

    20240319_110722.jpg

Up first, I built Goldburn with intent to paint and detail afterwards. A lot of seams to close: the head, neck, claws, and tail. I keep a supply of paper binder clips at the ready for a reason.

    20240319_134946.jpg

I made the mistake of painting the wings before assembling the body so it chipped and got stripped for a full repaint.

    20240319_175830.jpg

I'm also going to go back over the Kaiser helmet to clean up the prepainted trim.

I worked on Dynazenon tonight, getting some actual assembly work done while I sorted through everything to get painted with metallic paints for eyes, sensors, and lights.

    20240319_212825.jpg

Dynadiver, the waist. Interesting bits of fun options here. The tower on the submarine mode splits and become the robot's hip skirts and also they include a fixed version for displaying it as just the vehicle.

    20240316_105434.jpg

A couple days ago, I primed the underside of the submarines nose so I can paint it red. Not to brag but I did this freehand without any masking.

First wave of sensor painting, all of the green glowing bits from crotch, to chest, to foreheads. I used a mix of silver and clear green for this.

    20240319_231144.jpg

I'll say this about the plastic quality. It's much better than my first Moderoid Mazinkaiser which crumbled on me. The nicest part is how well it reacts to Tamiya cement. The yellow strut on the crotch was two pieces split down the middle. The cement melted and fused it together so smoothly you can barely see the join after it's been trimmed and sanded.

    20240319_231153.jpg

I built the front portion of the helmet and cementing parts to the red plastic it doesn't stain either. Which is very appreciated Especially when I use cement to restore the surface color over nub marks.

    20240319_232852.jpg

    So far so good.

And now for the mail call.

    20240319_173454.jpg

I scored the Moderoid Gridman and BIG Goldburn set on ebay and the seller included the slipcase for the total Rogue Kaiser Gridman package.

This box art... is Access Code: F***ing Awesome.

    20240319_173430.jpg

This slipcase is designed to hold the Gridman set and the previously released Dynazenon.

    20240319_173438.jpg

    Access code: well played GSM....

A quick peak inside the box and manual, it's going to fun to paint..
And I say "fun" in both genuine and sarcastic ways.
The first clue is the sticker sheet.

    20240319_183354.jpg

Big Goldburn and the blue stripes coursing down its wings will be done in paint but the jeweled chest will need those red glowing stickers.

Gridman is going to need the considerable amount of color.

    20240319_183939.jpg

The full color construction manual shows the kit in its entirely bare plastic.
Note, there are some prepainted parts, namely Gridman's gold forehead crest. Sorry no photograph of that tonight.

I've been busy. I mixed a pan batch of sky blue with arctic blue metallic for Goldburn that I wound up using for Dynazenon where it needs blue paint.

    20240320_124557.jpg

Goldburn is mostly painted. I need to clean up the messy edges. I repainted the prepainted trim on the helmet for Kaiser Knight.

    20240320_201243.jpg

Since taking these pictures, I've accented Goldburn's face and neck.

    20240321_194632.jpg

The painted crest will give you an idea for how the rest of Goldburn will look when it's done. More on that next time.

Speaking of repainted, the face is getting its upgrade.

    20240320_201532.jpg

Still a little rough and needs to be fixed up.

The eyes for Rex and Dyna Soldier are painted. The black mask underlining the eyes was done with a Gundammarker.

    20240321_105232.jpg

Flip this section over and the roof of Rex's mouth becomes the chest of Dyna Soldier.
I sharpened the prepainted blue jewels and did the off-white trim in paint.

    20240321_180017.jpg

Dyna Diver's nose is painted, all the way to the edge without any spillage.

    20240320_201255.jpg

The bridge towers and fins are painted. This picture only shows them primed but I just coated them in my off-white mix.

    20240320_201316.jpg

A pan mix of metallic yellow and orange for the viewports.

    20240321_193940.jpg

I'm starting to fill in the prepainted off-white areas on the chest, and getting into Dyna Wing's wings.

I had to strip and repaint the yellow striped wings because my paint on unprimed plastic just looked awful. You just can't get away without priming in some cases.

    20240321_193840.jpg

    This looks much better.

    20240321_220829.jpg

I managed to clean the spillage on the rest of the wing parts as well without damaging anything.

    20240321_221648.jpg

Up next, accent to start and I can finish the black panel lining.

    20240321_233618.jpg

A quick spread of the wings, and then assembly work from here.

    20240321_233940.jpg

The last bit of work for the night is the helmet, Dyna Wing's tail fins.

    20240321_233950.jpg

Painted and cemented, I'll finish sanding over the seams after it dries.

I finished Goldburn and the Dyna Wing, and I am not stopping until Dynazenon is done.

Goldburn was just a matter of accenting and cleaning up the edges of where my paint spilled over.

    20240322_211454.jpg

The helmet for Kaiser mode got a little paint to recolor the prepainted gold trim.

    20240322_211442.jpg

Articulation is its central weakness but the real reason this kit exists is for its chest plate mode.

    20240322_210819.jpg

    More on that later.

Dyna Wing's wings were the first hurdle to getting started on this kit.

    20240322_213943.jpg

Now with that out of the way, I find a little extra work to do.

    20240323_205634.jpg

There are molded wheels for landing gear on the bottom of the two cannons. MrHobby Aqueous (Gundam color) Titans Blue 2 is a perfect match for the plastic color of Dyna Striker's wheels.

After painting and attaching the two skirt flaps underneath, the helmet for Dynazenon is the last piece.

    20240323_221149.jpg

I felt the back side needed some color too.

    20240323_221333.jpg

Thus finishes Dyna Wing. Everything else is happening somewhat all at once but I will most likely finish the Diver next.

    20240325_205731.jpg

    Feet, assembled and painted underneath.

    20240325_223604.jpg

Rex feet on the opposite side, undercoating the toes where they meet the red plastic.

    20240325_225530.jpg

Dyna Diver's part swap for combining is a tale of two bridge towers.

    20240323_204252.jpg

First is the one that splits down the middle for the hip skirt plates in robot mode.

    20240323_204301.jpg

The second is for displaying Diver as a stand alone submarine.

    20240325_201438.jpg

The underbelly of the nose of the sub was painted by hand with no masking.

Dyna Striker and seeing how it unshells for combining.

    20240323_154904.jpg

All this strips away and leaves a slandered wrist without the bulk.

    20240324_002025.jpg

The front grill and hands are still in progress.

    20240325_141454.jpg

I still need to finish detailing the knuckles and paint the palms in gray.

Lastly Dyna Soldier begins where it becomes the face of Rex.

    Dyna Diver coming together.
The manual doesn't have many reference pictures of the finished painted sample build so it's fun to see what I missed painting.

    20240327_113644.jpg

The whole underside of the waist needs painting. Five minutes of primer and ten minutes later to paint, and fixed.

    20240327_120448.jpg

    Now the legs.

    20240327_143136.jpg

Knees first, then everything else around them.

    20240327_185002.jpg

This is where I'm also starting to add the gray paint to the engraved areas, which is what I'll have to go back and do on the Dyna Wing.

    20240327_190622.jpg

Triggering Gurren Lagann memories looking at the red on the legs.

    20240327_190608.jpg

The ball joint rods of the ankles needed painting so they wouldn't be like black/red socks between the legs and feet.

    20240328_000443.jpg

    Submarine mode to start.

There are supposed to be two fins on the backs of the legs, but I dun gouf'd and painted the wrong sides.

    20240327_203108.jpg

They've been stripped and repainted, not seen here.

Last bit of work so far is I attached the shell and opening cover panels for the missle pods.

    20240328_230804.jpg

Those violet blue rails are another of the prepainted areas on the kit, but I'm not going to retouch those like I did the off white stripes.

Diver's fins and additional greeble parts attached.

    20240329_124935.jpg

That's two, and now two to go.

    20240329_131518.jpg

The Striker is up next as it's got the most parts already started.

    20240329_222023.jpg

While I was giving the Wing its finishing touch ups, I completed the paint on the spoiler shoulder panels.

    20240329_223930.jpg

Gunship gray paint bringing the hands to life.

    20240329_193859.jpg

The hand grind is essential. Joints, palms, and knuckles.

    20240329_223833.jpg

Now to build the carbody that becomes the arms.

... but first , I did the finishing touches to the Dyna Wing.

    20240329_194932.jpg

As said a few pics ago! I touched up the Wing and did the fine point detailing with gunship gray paint. The engraved notches, across the body and especially marked in the black panels.

    20240329_212937.jpg

This gave me a chance to clean up all of yellow stripes and touch up the wings.

    20240329_213744.jpg

    F*** those stickers!

So, one last updated shot of the Wing before it's needed again.

Dyna Striker in progress. Where all of the time is spent watching cement dry and sanding the seams.

    20240330_141501.jpg

Paper binder clips and my 4" clamps to fuse everything together evenly.

    20240330_144900.jpg

It's where things slow down having to wait for the cement to dry and sand the seams between building the forearms and biceps.

    20240330_171714.jpg

Also the fun of trying not to accidentally cement the elbows to the forearms. Luckily nothing happened there.

    20240330_211623.jpg

This just about completes the Dyna Striker for making the arms. I want to accent wash the tires before I put the wheels on.

    20240330_231523.jpg

In the meantime, I can finish detailing and put on the shell for its car mode after that.

    Dyna Striker done!

    20240331_114606.jpg

Accenting and wicking the tires and rims.

    20240331_120055.jpg

Wheels on! They're pinned in place by a mushroom peg and it can roll. Not very well though.

I can already smell the part swap for the arms. Looking at the picture of it in bike mode I can see where the forearm panels are flat and not the full shape of the forearms.
