Let's see... only counting what has been released so far...

-Jin Jiang Toys made 2 color variants (grey and movie colors)
    -Justitoys made 5 color variants (G1 toy, G1 animation, G2 blue, G2 green, black/blue, black/red)
    -Zhan Jiang made 1
    -Toyworld did 1
    -Fanstoys did 4 variants
    -Warbotron did 1
    -Collection Kingdom did 1
    -Fansproject made 2 versions
    -Planet X made 2 variants
    -GCreation did 1
    -DX9 is making 1
    -Iron Factory did one.

That's 22 released I can count that have been released!

    Unreleased 3P Grimlocks include:

    -MechFansToys is making one
    -Gigapower is making one
    -this MMC one
-the War Within from Spark Toys
    -the cassette one from KFC
-the Kickstarter ones from PWTToo (which had 3 color variants, G1, SG, BW)
-Matrix Prime Toys is making that movie Grimlock combiner

    So that's 9 unreleased ones.

    Any others?

Yeah, these days we know that the gold parts on dinosaurs were actually golden feathers, and that the chrome was far more pervasive than previously thought. Thankfully, Hasbro's latest offerings no longer propagate the long-since discredited smoke color theory in the transparent portions of their anatomy!

Point taken, but I meant the overall anatomy more than anything. Like, I'm allergic to tail-dragging and box-shaped heads on dinos. I get the whole "they're dinosaurs who turn into sword-weilding robots, why bother with accuracy" argument, and I freely admit this is an irrational pet peeve of mine. I've always loved dinosaurs (shocker) so I get hung up on stuff like this.

I'm definitely interested in this Grimlock, hopefully he gets tweaked in an even more IDW direction.

If MMC produced the rest of the IDW Dinobots I think I'd have to pass - not a fan. I like the characters, not their dino designs. Especially Snarl who looks like a metal potato with a wierd, puffin like, bird head. Actually the rest (other than Swoop) look like foil covered potatoes as well. They need a little more "techno" in their technorganic designs.

Perhaps this is where MMC's reformatting would be a benefit. Tweak their dino designs into something cooler (IMHO).

...yeah, Grimlocks neck does kinda suck.

    I'm interested. He looks menacing.
I enjoyed the Maximum Dinobots story arc, and this reminds me of him then.

I'd prefer a blue version if they made it. I'm partial to blue, plus I have the G2 Grimlock.
I guess it would be about Ultra sized, similar to Tarn in robot height.

    Iron Factory did one.

Huh, that tail though... I mean I draw dinos with beefy tails... but there's gotta be a better way. looks kinda like an ant thorax :)

I'm definitely ok with the front half of that render, love the brute looking dino mode. Lotsa character, cool silhouette, scary looking(which is great for Big Grim)

I would love a G2 blue deco on this. I don't even want to think about it for fear of disappointment.

We already have enough G1 Grimlocks so far to last us a lifetime. It won't hurt to get something new every now and then especially when it comes to designs that haven't been made into toys yet like the IDW Dinobots.

I've wanted a more accurate alt mode for Grimlock for awhile. Much of this looks like a step in the right direction. I don't really mind that the head is too small, because a properly sized one would be problematic for transformation. What do you do with such a huge melon? If it transforms like usual, that's something like a quarter of the alt mode hanging off the back.

The neck is a little unsightly, but I'm not sure how you keep it articulated without that kind of gap.

Unfortunately, the legs I do mind. I want a more properly digitigrade bend, but this doesn't really seem to have it.

I'll follow the figure with interest to refine it, but it's not any sort of a must buy at the moment.

I think Generation Toy did one for their Computron? And then someone KO'd and upscaled it?

Hard to judge based on this image alone, but there's definitely potential here. Modern IDW Grimlock's design is pretty slick, and this seems to hit most of the major design cues, albeit slightly off (proportions are off in the arms, the ears are way too long and spread out). Definitely digging the more "realistic" dino mode, though.

I take your point, but to be fair much of the saturation has come with companies wanting to do their own G1 MP Grimlock.

Take those out and you're not really left with that many styles that have been done or are coming out.

I would be on board with this if there were improvements to T-Rex mode.

I'm sure there will be improvements if they're going forward with this.
I'm guessing someone spoiled this reveal that was probably being saved for TFCon (that's if they were going to reveal it there).

Only one company did an MP G1 Grimlock, Fanstoys. Collection Kingdom did an oversized KO of MP Grimlock, so you could count that one I guess.
GigaPower is coming out with a G1 MP ish Grimlock also.
The rest are not even close to MP G1.

If I'm counting this correctly, of the ones released already, there are 11 different Mold/Style/Size takes (not counting repaints):

Bay KO, WST G1, OS KO MP, MP, FP voyager, TW voyager, GC voyager, Legends G1, Legends WW, KO Legends G1 Voyager, and FOC/WFC

Here they are grouped where they would fit in (including repaints):

    Bayverse KO - 2 (JJToys)
    World's Smallest G1 - 5 (Justitoys)
OS KO of MP - 1 (CK)
    MP G1 - 4 (FT)
Voyager - 4 (TW, FP, GC)
Voyager KO of Legends G1 - 1 (ZJ of WB)
    Legends G1 - 2 (DX9, WB)
Legends War Within - 1 (IF)
    FOC/WFC - 3 (PX)

    Then you have coming up:

MFT of DX9 = Legends G1 OS KO
    GigaPower = MP G1 ish
    MMC = IDW
Spark Toys = MP War Within
    KFC = cassette
    PWTToo = weapon thing
    Matrix Prime toys = Bayverse

So adding in the unreleased ones, that's 1 out of 15 different styles/sizes to choose from.

Also @Scaleface, you didn't count the 3rd Planet X repaint (chrome) and also the unreleased GCreation Bayverse Grimlock (not to be confused with their Voyager ish Shuraking Grimlock).

@Mr.Deflok That was Warbotron's KO'ed by Zhan Jiang I believe.
    He has counted them.

Talking about how many Grimlocks there are is pretty disingenuous because very few of them are competing with each other. Counting repaints is ridiculous because then Starscream is the most profilic Transformer ever.

The closest one this will compete with is Severo and maybe Grimshell or PotP Grimlock

    Militant Monoformer Militia? :D

Fourth? Weak! I'm trying to avoid my 8th (DX9, this will likely be an easy pass for me)

I'm keen for this. I've been back and forth over the PLanet X and FansProject Dino's wondering whether I could successfully shoe horn them into my IDW collection and generally had to conclude that I couldn't. This may help with that. But...
I think it's probably safe to assume this will be a one-shot IDW Dinobot and the rest of the team will go un-released. The DJD are a very special case in terms of releasing a whole "crew" - MMC aren't rushing to do the same for anyone else.
And, while I'm not all the way up-to-date on my IDW plot-lines, isn't this Grimlock from the Scavengers storyline where he's got a few screws loose and is flying solo? I don't think the dino's have teamed up with Grimlock for a long time.

Grimlock has been the only one in the MTMTE series, the other 4 on Cybertron dealing with the "post war" period. That has gone about as well as you would expect for Dinobots.

Off the top of my head I don't believe Grimlock has actually seen the other Dinobots since Maximum Dinobots in 2009, way back before even All Hail Megatron.
