After reading all these posts about how Saltus covers a lot of what's important to me I've decided I still can't get past the chest design.
Especially with how prominent it is in bot mode. The straight lines and black paint to represent shadows just destroys the look for me.. if it was a plastic
piece I'd be tempted to get one and resculpt something but that's not going to happen with diecast.

Very pleased for everyone who's got a Saltus and is happy with him and that there's no deal-breaking QC issues or anything else, big fan of Ocular Max and always want to see them do well.

Looks like I'm back in the hopeful Virtus camp for now.

This is my ONLY beef with this figure in pics. However, I decided to take the plunge to see what it's all about anyway. I have Apache now and have owned both Allen and Big Spring. for some reason I've always like Springer's design. Apache looks great, but It's not a fun bot to mess with. Big Spring is fun to transform but has a face only a creator could love and the chest locking issue. I really liked Allen. Super fun in all aspects but could have used a better face sculpt as well. May have to pick it up again some day.

I think Saltus could be a slightly more G1 accurate Allen for me. We'll see next week when he and Roadking arrive from TCP. Can't wait. Virtus looks like it could fit the bill too and with XTB's recent commitments to better quality and engineering could be the best of them all.

I can snap some side by sides with Allen if you want. I held off on apache because I really liked the xtb renders and I figured saltus would be a little too off the mark.

Not strictly the place for it but Big Spring’s chest locking issue is immediately resolved with a swipe of clear nail polish on the hollow sections of the torso that hold in the chest. Invisible, cheap, and easy.

The head, on the other hand...

How are the tolerances on Saltus compared to first run Sphinx and Backdraft? Those are the only OM figures I have.

I'm really thinking about getting this guy if the tolerances are good.

    Thanks in advance! :)

Tolerances on mine are 100% on spot. Much better than on my Sphinx (which has the sacking fromt wheels).

I like this size difference between Hot Rod and Springer. Six months ago, I had Takara’s Hot Rod next to FT’s Apache...and the height disparity between the two was too much for me. I still love Apache, but he’s on display in copter mode for the time being.

This is where I'm at as well. Virtus looks good in all three modes and I'm excited to see him delivered.

Finally got this guy... and I'm part of the backwards shin panels club. The DIY streak continues for me. The good news is that he's solid otherwise. Everything works as it should. Articulation is superb. I'll post some pics after I perform the fix.

Very true. He’s a shot of the credits on backdraft’s box. Ak did the design and Jesslyn did the sculpt. I wasn’t guessing, I’m listed on the same credits.

Almost all oxmax designs have core structure design handled by Alex and Backdraft was no different. That's always been the process. Alex makes the major decisions of how the toy is going to work transformation wise and then another designer is handed that very unfinished model to work with and adjusts and adds whatever they wish to as they iterate on it.

He doesn't do things like surface work or external detail parts is what I gather and often his models will get proportions adjusted and so on. Some of them don't even have all their limbs or even heads when he hands them over haha; again he's a core structure guy he solves the big pain in the ass aspects of designing transformers and it allows the other designers to focus on everything else.

Got this guy and FT Roadking today. I have to say, I was skeptical that Saltus would take over Apache for the top spot, but it happened. I like the bulk on Saltus much better and I prefer slightly softer face sculpt in hand. Apache wins on the chest design, but that's it for me. Very happy with my purchase.

    Oh...and FT Roadking is amazing.
