when windows are so dark you can't see through them, I'd rather have them be painted than fragile clear plastic

In every case someone wishes clear windows, they mean clear inserts with an opaque plastic frame, Not fully clear plastic pieces. In that instance, it wouldn't be fragile, just a few more parts to manufacture.

So, is there anywhere in the U.S. where I can still get Medicus and Navigant?

Would rather have the original versions and not the upcoming toy versions...

I think it's far more likely because they have a shitload of engineering that goes on behind the windows and it would look terrible to see Defensor's hands in First-Aid's robot mode legs, for example. Similarly, there's a lot going on behind the window panels on Hot Spot and having the windows painted (as the original cartoon and toy both had) probably looks far better than seeing a bunch of complex engineering.

This thing has over 500 parts so trust me when I say that parts count ain't really a concern here. Normally we'd prefer to split the windows into separate parts if possible but it's often not possible due to space limitation or when splitting parts will compromise structure integrity. At times the only option left is to have the whole part done in clear plastic and paint the outer surface trying to match the surrounding plastic color. But again this option is only valid when the part is say a thin shell and does not have engineering joints running through it. For example in Mixmaster there's a screw running through the part so if the window is clear then you'll see a screw behind it. Likewise in Ignis you see there are hole running through behind the windscreen and the whole shell is a complicated one. You wouldn't want to see the holes through the clear plastic or have this particular part done in clear then painted.

They don't use ratchet joints whenever possible. But that's a personal thing of mine... I don't blame OM for that. However, the lack of ratchets in Defensor's elbows is a weird idea to say the least

Fanstoys, Unique Toys, TFC, TouchToys, Generation Toy, TFM, etc use clear plastic or clear parts inserts to recreate windows and structural integrity or engineering are rarely compromised becauseof that.

Painted windows LOOK terrible imo, and I fail to see a real reason why OM didn't even try... The only thing I can think of is to reduce part count or the amount of molds, which are really expensive. When I get the figure I will check if clear inserts could have been used.

Not a deal breaker... But this set will stand out too much next to my other figures just for that, especially my Generation Toy's Defensor, because I will display them in alt mode.

I may have missed the boat here, but it appears to be that my Navigant was packaged wrong. I seem to have two smiling faces, but I'm missing a grimace? Can anyone confirm?

I've always felt translucent windows, in particular light colored or colorless ones, look terrible on the figures.

i mean look how segmented the front windshield and back windows are cause of transformation stuff. if they did inserts there’s probably at least one or two small bits that would still have to be paint because they can’t fit an insert and it’d look pretty bad with half paint/half clear. also i think this should be pretty obvious but i’m very glad they didn’t choose the other option of making half the structure of the shoulder dark clear plastic with light blue painted over it.

i would’ve liked to see transparent windows too but it seems like they’d have to redesign some stuff purely to get that so idk if it’d be worth it

Same. Except I'd go one step further and say I'd rather my toys, even 'collector oriented' figures, look like toys.

I have no interest in accurate real world vehicles. I realize I'm in the very slim minority though. Ironically, I also want toon accuracy and have no interest in the actual toy decos.

Here's what First Aid's legs look like, and what you'd see through the window *in robot mode*, let alone vehicle mode, if the windows were translucent.

Personally, I think seeing the combiner hand and other parts inside his leg would look terrible when posed on a shelf - but I guess that's just me.

really depends on the figure. like honestly Medicus would probably look better if they just did all the windows painted, but Groove would look kinda off without his windshield being transparent. i think the half transparent half painted is worse than either of the other two options

Unless it's got a proper interior, I like painted windows. No point in giving me a clear view of a bunch of mushed-up robot kibble.
