I'm assuming places like Menards, Home Depot, or Lowe's, but I'm not sure. I know ours looks pretty old.

And from what my Dad tells me, you want to do it to try and help get some weight off the roof if the snow gets too piled up. Given this year has already dumped I think more snow than the previous year in just one month, I can believe it. I'd guess though most people don't realize that roof raking is a thing nowadays.

What you really want to do is scrape the snow off the eaves, all the way back to to where the house wall starts. The main problem is all that snow on the warmer part of your roof will melt and the water runs down, then re-freezes when it hits the snow on the colder part of your roof (the eaves). That forms ice, which causes the water to back up and eventually leak down through your roof into your walls. Then you've got a real expensive problem.

So scrape all the snow off the cold part of your roof to let that water run off and you'll be good. It's a lot easier to do this than to wait until the ice forms.

Hey - long time no post, I know! Things have been hectic!

I'm actually moving out of state (eek!) next week, and digging through my stuff I found a ton of collector's cards from the 90s - comics, star wars, various movie properties. Even a few baseball cards.

Does anyone here either a) want them, or b) know a local shop that would take them? I don't even want money for them - plan B is Goodwill - I'd just prefer they go to someone who appreciates them! All you'd have to do is meet up with me tomorrow, Friday, or Monday and They'th yours!

Nothing at Bville Target, nothing at Bloomington Target.

Also: Battle Angel Alita was pretty good.

Special shout-out to T-Hybrid for the post about the Overlords at TJ Maxx. I picked one up from the St. Paul Midway store. What a great deal!

I raked my roof today. Those ice dams were starting to look a little gnarly.

What do you guys do when part of the roof you need to clear is over an AC unit? The last thing I want is to bring a pile of ice crashing down on it.

I wouldn't worry much about raking your roof unless it's very flat or you're having trouble with ice dams. That being said, if you're worried about stuff crashing down just skip that spot.

Also, DO NOT RAKE DOWN TO THE BARE ROOF unless you hate having roof granules or love buying a new roof.

Yeah I had like 3-4 inches of ice building up around the edges where the roof meets the soffits. Like Ian said, don't scrape down to the shingles, but get enough snow off so that the sun can get in there and do its work.

Oh okay. I've only got icicles on the one side and nothing that looks like a giant sheet of ice visible.

Home ownership...why do we do this to ourselves.

I blame my wife. Without her I'd be more than happy to live in an apartment or townhouse with HoA where I didn't have to worry about snowblowing, lawn mowing, and other house maintenance items. But she likes to be out where we have a house and a little land, so here I am. ;)
