It was an early 80's series, it only lasted 1 season because they got sued by Tonka claiming they ripped off the Gobots. (They didn't, they ripped off God Mars and the Metal Men) No toys were ever released to the public, though they were planned. The animation on the series is amazing. You know how the opening intro of the show in many cases is amazingly animated and the actual show is only pretty good or decent. Entire episodes of Orebots were animated at the same quality as the opening. Think of it like if every transformers episode was animated as well as the movie or better.

Everything is always moving and they use lots of interesting angles.

I'm back to report, watching the first two episodes. Picture quality is pretty darn good. Seems a shade on the darker side, maybe it always was though. Hard to tell after 30 plus years of watching bad VHS copies. Sometimes the colors are a little blown out but nothing to bad. This is definitely coming from broadcast masters and not film sources. But, definitely the best we can ever hope to get. I'm super happy.

They did not rip of God Mars. They just used the same toy as a base for the combined mode character design. And Orbots was animated by the same studio that did God Mars, so it's all legit.

But yeah, complete rip off of Metal Men, except better than Metal Men has ever managed to be, other than arguably the original Kanigher series. I keep hoping DC will do something with Metal Men that lives up to the potential, but so far, a bunch of near misses. Duncan Rouleau came close, Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire came close. At least the Brave and the Bold cartoon used them well.

    Someday.

I loved the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire arc. Loved how they all kept forgetting about copper. The humor was great in that series. I know they didn't really rip them off, but it sounded funnier in my head that way.

Actually, I do think Orbots ripped off Metal Men. Or at least was heavily inspired by. I think it's pretty blatant actually. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the writer had grown up in the 1960s as a DC fan. And it's not like DC was doing anything with the Metal Men in 1984, so he probably felt, hey, why not?

    Hell yeah!

If I'm not mistaken I believe the show never continued because they were being sued for having so much of a likeness to Voltron.

You know what, I've never actually watched this but I'm a sucker for 80's cartoons and will probably pick it up. I wish more 80's animation would be released, especially the obscure titles (no matter how bad it is). I remember so many cartoons from my childhood that I'd love to revisit.

The wb archive has been a god sent in that regard ... Gobots, Thudarr, Silverhawks, and so much more. I'm pretty sure they have rights to Bionic Six and fully expect them to release that too someday. They've just released so many titles that l've feared may have never come out. Orbots was at the top of that list for me. I feel now that everything will eventually come, it's simply a matter of time.

Yeah, if we can finally have Orbots, the sky is the limit. Orbots, the Adam West Batman tv show, and the Wonder Years were the 3 things I thought would never be officially available, and now all of them are out. Unbelievable.
