In the first place; I don't understand what the issue is if people don't immediately understand a character is female.

Like if I assumed Shatter was a dude-bot, then heard the dulcet, velvety tones of Angela Basset coming out of her I'd just think "Please step on me giant robot Angela Basset" "oh she's a chick, cool" and continue watching the movie.
