I know this is the toy we're talking about here, but it's actually crazy to me how the Mainframe designs exude so much personality in comparison to the CGI shows we have had lately with Transformers. Everyone was so unique and expressive. Your pic just proves that even more than I already thought. Awesome.

 

I genuinely think it was the fact that they didn't have traditional faces due to how rigid and difficult to animate those tended to be at the time. Only Optimus and Megatron, at least to start, had what would be considered "normal" Transformers faces with proper mouths, yet had very expressive, geometric eyes that were fairly flat, rather than attempting to look like an eyeball in a socket.

They also had a lot more depth and layers to their faces. Rhinox, for example, isn't just a set of sculpted features on a flat plane, his features wrap around his head. Guys like Dinobot and Cheetor also had a lot of depth and layering to their faces rather than just a smooth surface with cutouts for the eyes and mouth, and everything had a sharp edge rather than a smooth organic shape. (at least not until the characters started getting new bodies)

I am of the opinion that these are rejected official product that didn’t pass QC.
I'd be more interested in a 3P version with some minor tweaks or a reprogrammed-Rhinox repaint.

 

The only time I'm interested in KOs is when they improve the original product. Like if the ankles were tweaked or if they repainted him in predacon colors

 

That is a great idea (Predacon Rhinox). I really hope they do that...
