Added prototype picture to first post.
the alt mode also looks like FP Protector's roller thingy
Hiding wheels is one of the hardest things to do with any tranformer design because they are a large solid part that needs to remain solid and so the only places to hide them is in big open hollow areas which typically aren't found on arms, especially rarely found on shoulders.
To hide them in the shoulders would probably require the figure to have no shoulder joint at all or at best the shoulders would need to be much larger and look awkward.
While I agree with your points about wheels being hard to hide, I think his question was more "why does he have wheels at all?"
Because the figure, like many of mmc's designs, is not a pure 100% comic faithful recreation of the character. Its an original MMC design that simply happens to have many nods to the comic designs.
The reformatted line was never intended to be used for making very comic accurate figures, its always been mmc's "classics" line. How accurate each figure ends up simply comes down to the designers personal interests at the end of the day and what they wanna do with each thing they work on. I believe cassy did this guy and maybe cassy just thought a wheeled space car would be more fun than a hover car and it wasn't really any more complicated a decision than that. Or maybe Grif did it and this is him responding to many people disliking Azalea being a hover car without wheels. Sometimes accuracy just isn't as important as making something more fun.
what size class/ scale is he?
could he pass for a masterpiece, scale-wise?
I'm too lazy to look it up but if that sword is from another toy, hexatron maybe, you could get a pretty good estimate of his size.
A lot of reformatted is sort of between chug and mp.
It looks the same, but I think it is a smaller version of the sword that comes with their Nova Prime. I could be wrong about them being smaller though.
So far reformatted has been "tall CHUG", but still decidedly CHUG in terms of proportions. Some people put Hexatron with their MPs, I've heard, but that's because he's supposed to be huge.
That said, it really depends on what size Drift ends up. I would think Deluxe, which would mean you're probably out-of-luck if you wanted him to fit with your MPs. But if he's more of a Voyager size, you might be able to get away with it.
I wish this figure didn't have wheels at all, but the way they're situated on the shoulders does at least loosely resemble the thrusters in the image you posted.
Does anyone else think and/or hope that the remold/repaint of this is going to be Hot Rod?
He's already sharing a mold/retool I thought, with MMC Wing.
MMC just has to announce their own MTMTE not-Rodimus
If anything it would be re-done as Deadlock
I would actually like to see Alpha and Beta retooled as Fastlane and Cloudraker, but Hot Rod from one of them could be interesting. It'd have to be a pretty heavy retool of Alpha if they did that, but I could see it working.
To be honest, rodders needs a mold of his own. He already shares an alt mode with getaway so that's a recolor with slight re molding there.
hmmmm, i take back my previous comment about the wheels , the latest design of Drift in IDW now has Wheels at the back of his shoulders haha. MMC are psychic haha
YES! I seriously hope they continue to improve his head. The initial renders on the front page look amazing, except for the head. So if they fix that, it'd be perfect; looks like they're well on their way
Daimchoc shared some renders on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DaimChocRep...70542129962888
I'm presuming this next one is an older version. Interesting.
