I purchased an extra Man-Thing BAF from eBay this week to repaint. I love the mold, but the deco is incredibly boring and I thought I could spruce it up a bit. I always get really nervous about painting my only copy, so I like to buy an extra just in case I mess something up. Base coat is brown Rust-Oleum spray. All other colors used are Folk Art acrylics. It was all sealed with Rust-Oleum satin clear. Hope you all enjoy! As always, comments and critique are welcome! **update** New pics added to this op after spraying the figure with Tamiya TS-80 clear coat.
Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, a short drive to te Everglades ManThing always has a special place in my heart. You did great man! Love the added layers of tone!
Much more vibrant. I've never understood why toy factories go to the hassle of adding fine detail, then avoid painting them entirely.
I have to admit that I'm more of a Swamp Thing fan, but a sale for Marvel comics through Comixology prompted me to purchase some Man-Thing books and I love him! Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated! Thanks for the feedback! I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to paint apps, but this guy is a BAF! Hasbro definitely went the cheap route here. Maybe because there were so many new sculpt in that wave? I don't know.
Thanks so much! It was sticky. I think probably because some of those parts are bit rubbery. The loin cloth area was probably the worst. Had I really thought about it, I would have done a sealing coat or two first before the base coat.
I'd only add a mat varnish/coat because it's a bit too glossy. Even looks a bit slimy in this bright light but otherwise awesome
Thanks so much for the feedback! I really wanted him to more muted/less shiny as well. The spray that I used is the same that I use for all of my sealing and my other customs are usually not that shiny. It may be something about the dark green that I used for the second layer that's causing some of the shine. Either way, I'm going to see if I can find some sort of ultra matte spray to help dull him down a bit. Until then, I'm going to use your slimy excuse.
Thank you! I'm definitely drawn to the more "messy" characters when working on my customs. Gives me a chance get some drybrushing practice in and if I mess something up... It was "intended".
Yeah. For figures like these, I don't use spray cans as my base coat. I apply acrylic paint with a brush.
Thanks! I really like the character and the figure! Just needed some additional color to bring out those details. I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future. Thanks! It seems to be better now after a few days of curing and those additional top coats.
Quick update. At the advice of @Lunatic Prime , I purchased some Tamiya TS-80 clear coat and it was perfect. Knocked that extra shine right out and I couldn't be happier with the results! Much appreciated! I'll definitely be using this stuff for future customs and probably revisiting some past ones as well!
